Partisan Records is an independent record label with offices in London, Berlin, and Los Angeles, as well as in New York City, where the company was co-founded in 2007 by Tim Putnam and Ian Wheeler. The label, initially run out of Putnam's South Brooklyn apartment, relocated in 2009 to Williamsburg.{{Cite web |url=http://www.pluginmusic.com/news/archive.php?id=3903 |title=Plug In Music News Story: Partisan Records Give Home To Deer Tick, The Standard, Holy Sons |access-date=2008-11-20 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180314174833/http://www.pluginmusic.com/news/archive.php?id=3903 |archive-date=2018-03-14 |url-status=dead }}
History
Holy Sons (Decline of the West) was the first release on the label, and early success followed shortly thereafter with the signing of the band Deer Tick (War Elephant).[http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2008/11/deer_tick_recor.html Brooklyn Vegan: Deer Tick Album Re-Release]
In 2008, while working as the night manager for the Knitting Factory venue at their Leonard Street location in Manhattan, Putnam was approached by Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis to form a strategic partnership with Partisan.[http://www.wmg.com/news/renowned-indie-labels-partisan-and-knitting-factory-records-partner-alternative-distribution WMG News: Renowned Indie Labels Partisan and Knitting Factory Records Partner With ADA] Together, they reissued the Fela Kuti catalogue and revived their label, Knitting Factory Records, which also includes Grammy Award-nominated members of the Kuti family, Femi Kuti, and Seun Kuti.[https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/zena-white-named-md-partisan-records-knitting-factory-records/ Music Business Worldwide: Zena White Named MD of Partisan Records + KFR]
Partisan has since cultivated a wide variety of genres, prioritizing an artist-friendly philosophy, and achieving international acclaim. In 2019, they earned their first-ever Grammy nomination for Deran by Bombino[https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/grammys/8489192/2019-grammy-nominations-artists-react-tweets Billboard: Bombino Reacts to Grammy Nomination] followed by three more nominations between 2020 and 2023, for A Hero's Death by Fontaines D.C., Song for Our Daughter by Laura Marling, and I Inside the Old Year Dying by PJ Harvey.{{Cite web |title=2021 Grammy Award Nominations: The Full List |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/abigailfreeman/2020/11/24/2021-grammy-award-nominations-list/?sh=1869616b5239}}{{Cite web |title=2024 GRAMMYs: See The Full Winners & Nominees List |url=https://grammy.com/news/2024-grammys-nominations-full-winners-nominees-list |access-date=2024-04-19 |website=grammy.com}} In 2020, they achieved a #1 UK album for Ultra Mono by Idles, followed up by further #1 UK albums for Fontaines D.C.'s Skinty Fia and Idles's Tangk.{{Cite web |title=Idles Blast to Big Lead on Midweek U.K. Chart |url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/9456514/idles-lead-midweek-uk-chart}}{{Cite web |date=2022-04-29 |title=Fontaines D.C. celebrate their first-ever UK Number 1 album with Skinty Fia: "We're touched by everyone's response" |url=https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/fontaines-dc-celebrate-their-first-ever-uk-number-1-album-with-skinty-fia-we-re-touched-by-everyone-s-response-__36205/ |access-date=2024-04-19 |website=Official Charts |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=2024-02-23 |title=Idles secure second Number 1 album with TANGK |url=https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/idles-secure-second-number-1-album-with-tangk/ |access-date=2024-04-19 |website=Official Charts |language=en}} They also won their first Mercury Prize in 2023 for Ezra Collective's Where I'm Meant to Be.{{Cite web |title=Mercury Prize 2023 winner announced as Ezra Collective |url=https://news.sky.com/story/mercury-prize-2023-winner-announced-as-ezra-collective-12956600 |access-date=2024-04-19 |website=Sky News |language=en}}
