It is about {{convert|24|miles|km}} southeast of downtown Anchorage and about {{convert|3|miles|km}} northwest of Bird, and about {{convert|13|miles|km}} west-northwest of Girdwood.
Description
The community is located just west of Indian Creek and north of the Seward Highway within the Indian Valley. (The Seward Highway provides the only roadway access to Indian.){{google maps|url=https://www.google.com/maps/place/Indian,+Anchorage,+AK+99540/@60.9888761,-149.5188618,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x56c8864cc05fb903:0x556201d896e93995|title=Indian, Anchorage, AK|accessdate=November 10, 2015}} Although not part of the Chugach State Park, the community is entirely surrounded by the park.{{cite map|url=http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/chugachstateparkmap.pdf|title=Chugach State Park|website=dnr.alaska.gov|publisher=Alaska Department of Natural Resources: Division of Parks & Outdoor Recreation|cartography=Martin Stahl|scale=1:80,000|format=PDF|date=December 12, 2009|accessdate=November 10, 2015}}
Although the Alaska Railroad passes through the southern edge of the community (and has a siding that runs most of the length of community) none of the railroad's regular passenger trains stop in Indian. However, there are two special event trains that operate out of the Anchorage station that turn around (reverse direction) in Indian before returning to Anchorage. These two trains include the annual Easter Train and the Holiday Train (which runs twice each day on selected Saturdays in December).{{cite web|url=http://www.alaskarailroad.com/travel/OurTrains/SpecialEventTrains/EasterTrain/tabid/147/Default.aspx|title=Easter Train|website=alaskarailroad.com|publisher=Alaska Railroad|accessdate=November 13, 2015|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150630005828/http://alaskarailroad.com/travel/OurTrains/SpecialEventTrains/EasterTrain/tabid/147/Default.aspx|archivedate=June 30, 2015|via=archive.web.org}}{{cite web|url=http://www.alaskarailroad.com/travel/OurTrains/SpecialEventTrains/HolidayTrains/tabid/153/Default.aspx|title=Holiday Train|website=alaskarailroad.com|publisher=Alaska Railroad|accessdate=November 13, 2015|archive-date=September 30, 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150930015612/https://www.alaskarailroad.com/travel/OurTrains/SpecialEventTrains/HolidayTrains/tabid/153/Default.aspx|url-status=dead}} Neither train allows passengers to disembark in Indian.
The origin of the community (and currently one of the main attractions) is the Indian Valley Mine. The mine was established 1920 and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.{{cite web|url=http://focus.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/89001762|title=Asset Detail: Indian Valley Mine|website=nps.gov|publisher=National Park Service|accessdate=November 10, 2015}}
