InsightOut News was a grassroots journalism website based on the idea that news is "not entertainment nor a commodity." It grew out of covering Occupy Los Angeles and now also covers international events, particularly in the Middle East. Original content from the site is often featured by other media outlets, such as the LA Progressive and Crooks and Liars.{{cite news|title=Protesters and Family Attempt to Reoccupy Home of Recently Deported Mother; Police Respond in Riot Gear|url=http://occupyamerica.crooksandliars.com/node/55422/print|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=Crooks & Liars|date=8 March 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120329022850/http://occupyamerica.crooksandliars.com/node/55422/print|archive-date=29 March 2012|url-status=dead}}
Occupy Los Angeles
Margot Paez, the website's founder, is based in Los Angeles. Her first posts to the site were daily coverage of the Occupy L.A. protests, part of the Occupy movement that started in September 2011. This coverage included (sometimes critical) interviews with celebrity visitors like Dan Choi and Tom Morello, as well as coverage of everyday activities at the camp.{{cite news|last=Firecloud|first=Johnny|title=Insight Out News Covers Occupy LA|url=http://mediaroots.org/insight-out-news-covers-occupy-la.php|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=Media Roots|date=18 October 2011}}{{cite news|last=Dupuy|first=Tina|title=The Occupy Movement's Woman Problem|url=https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/11/the-occupy-movements-woman-problem/248831/|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=The Atlantic|date=21 November 2011}}
Photos and videos from InsightOut News have been picked up by other outlets such as LA Weekly.{{cite news|last=Wilson|first=Simone|title=VIDEO: Occupy L.A. As focus drifted away from the Occupy encampments, InsightOut modified and expanded its operations, taking on a larger scope of issues.{{cite news|last=Paez|first=Margot|title=Which Way Occupy LA?|url=http://www.laprogressive.com/which-way-occupy-la/|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=LA Progressive|date=25 October 2011}}
Style
InsightOut News has been noted specifically for posting content with sparse editing (for example footage interviews with Bill Maher and Jesse Jackson).{{cite news|last=Hogan|first=Richard|title=Grassroots TV Reporter Keeping Tabs on Occupy Los Angeles|url=http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlla/occupy-los-angeles-insight-out-news-margot-paez-bill-maher-jesse-jackson_b44944|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=Media Bistro|date=10 November 2011}} This approach is consistent with the site's philosophy of disseminating information with as much neutrality as possible.
The site also features videos of Margot Paez reporting from inside demonstrations and other chaotic situations.{{cite news|author=Messina|title=Occupy LA - Direct Action at CSU Chancellor's Office|url=http://mediaroots.org/occupy-la-direct-action-at-csu-chancellors-office.php|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=Media Roots|date=18 November 2011}} Paez was almost arrested during the eviction of the Occupy encampment.{{cite news|last=Kumar|first=Ro|title=Last night the Occupy LA encampment was cleared, 300 arrests made – Watch footage from the scene|url=http://localblu.com/2011/11/last-night-the-occupy-la-encampment-was-cleared-300-arrests-made-%E2%80%93-watch-footage-from-the-scene/|accessdate=27 March 2012|newspaper=Localblu|date=30 November 2011}}
InsightOut News was featured as an example of DIY or citizen journalism at a conference held by the LA Media Reform Group.{{cite web|title=LA Media Reform Group|date=3 February 2012 |url=http://lamediareform.wordpress.com/mediasummit2012/media-for-the-99-agenda/|publisher=Occidental College|accessdate=27 March 2012}}
