International Day Against DRM (IDAD), sometimes called just Day Against DRM or anti-DRM day, is a grassroots international observance of protests against digital rights management (DRM) technology.{{Cite web|url=https://www.defectivebydesign.org/dayagainstdrm/2018|title=International Day Against DRM 2018 – September 18th|website=www.defectivebydesign.org|access-date=2019-04-26}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.pcworld.com/article/255066/four_ways_to_celebrate_day_against_drm_today.html|title=Four Ways to Celebrate 'Day Against DRM' Today|last=Noyes|first=Katherine|date=2012-05-04|website=PCWorld|language=en|access-date=2019-04-26}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.fsf.org/news/allies-join-defective-by-design-for-the-tenth-anniversary-international-day-against-drm|title=Allies join Defective by Design for the tenth anniversary of the International Day Against DRM|website=www.fsf.org|access-date=2019-04-26}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.zdnet.com/article/october-3-2006-drm-lovers-day-of-reckoning/|title=October 3, 2006: DRM lovers' day of reckoning?|last=Berlind|first=David|website=ZDNet|language=en|access-date=2019-04-26}}{{Cite web|url=https://torrentfreak.com/international-day-against-drm-celebrates-its-12th-anniversary-180918/|title=International Day Against DRM Celebrates its 12th Anniversary|date=2018-09-18|website=TorrentFreak|language=en|access-date=2019-04-26}} The event is intended as "a counterpoint to the pro-DRM message broadcast by powerful media and software companies" and aims to draw attention to DRM's anti-consumer aspects.

Background

International Day Against DRM has been also described as a reaction against the lobbyist-dominated World Intellectual Property Day of the World Intellectual Property Organization, which promotes DRM.{{Cite web|url=https://www.defectivebydesign.org/organize-idad-2016|title=Organize your community for digital freedom on May 3rd {{!}} Defective by Design|website=www.defectivebydesign.org|access-date=2019-04-29}} World Intellectual Property Day has been criticized by the activists from civil society organizations such as IP Justice and the Electronic Information for Libraries who consider it one-sided propaganda as the marketing materials associated with the event, provided by WIPO, "come across as unrepresentative of other views and events".Sandra Bangasser, 2009, Multilateral Institutions and the Recontextualization of Political Marketing: How the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Outreach Efforts Reflect Changing Audiences. Dissertiation. Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa, noted that "World Intellectual Property Day has become little more than a lobbyist day".{{Cite web|url=http://www.michaelgeist.ca/2007/04/wipo-day/|title=World Intellectual Property Day|date=2007-04-26|website=Michael Geist|language=en-US|access-date=2019-04-26}}

Activism

This recurring event has been organized annually since 2006, and has been first introduced by the Defective by Design initiative. Various activities related to the event happen around the world, organized by anti-DRM grassroots activists and organizations. During the International Day Against DRM, there are discussions and promotions of DRM-free media and technology. Consumers are encouraged to switch to DRM-free alternatives.{{Cite web|url=https://www.pcworld.com/article/227151/time_to_give_drm_the_boot.html|title=It's Time to Give Digital Rights Management the Boot|last=Noyes|first=Katherine|date=2011-05-04|website=PCWorld|language=en|access-date=2019-04-29}} Companies that agree with the criticism of DRM have been known to offer discounts on products like DRM-free ebooks.
