The International Tea Day aims to raise awareness of the long history and the deep cultural and economic significance of tea around the world. The goal of the day is to promote and foster collective actions to implement activities in favour of the sustainable production and consumption of tea and raise awareness of its importance in fighting hunger and poverty.

An International Tea Day has been celebrated on December 15, since 2005, in tea producing countries like India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Uganda and Tanzania.{{Cite web|title = International Tea Day|url = http://www.cista-india.net/ITDDetails.aspx?id=1|website = Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers Association|accessdate = 2015-12-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151222120707/http://www.cista-india.net/ITDDetails.aspx?id=1 |archive-date=December 22, 2015 |url-status=dead}} International Tea Day aims to draw global attention of governments and citizens to the impact of the global tea trade on workers and growers, and has been linked to requests for price supports and fair trade.{{Cite web|title = South Asian tea workers call for International Tea day|url = http://www.sundaytimes.lk/080106/KandyTimes/kandytimes_000015.html|website = Sunday Times in Sri Lanka|accessdate = 2015-12-15|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20160304202244/http://www.sundaytimes.lk/080106/KandyTimes/kandytimes_000015.html|archive-date = 2016-03-04|url-status = live}}{{Cite web|title = International Tea Day: Consumers Demand a Fair Cuppa|url = http://transfair.ca/en/news-views/news/international-tea-day-consumers-demand-a-fair-cuppa|website = Fairtrade Canada|accessdate = 2015-12-15|date = 2010-01-11|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20151222115315/http://transfair.ca/en/news-views/news/international-tea-day-consumers-demand-a-fair-cuppa|archive-date = 2015-12-22|url-status = dead}}

In 2015, the Indian government proposed expanding the observance of International Tea Day through the FAO Intergovernmental Group on Tea (IGG on Tea).{{Cite web|title = 'Tea day' proposal to UN|url = http://www.telegraphindia.com/1151018/jsp/northeast/story_48637.jsp#.VnA6PXpLulM|website = The Telegraph|accessdate = 2015-12-15|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20151120135832/http://www.telegraphindia.com/1151018/jsp/northeast/story_48637.jsp#.VnA6PXpLulM|archive-date = 2015-11-20|url-status = dead}}

The FAO IGG on Tea leads multilateral efforts to support the world tea economy, has been a great advocate for the proclamation of the International Tea Day. In 2015, during a meeting in Milan, Italy, the IGG on Tea discussed the idea of an International Tea Day. The proposal was then endorsed by the [http://www.fao.org/ccp/en/ FAO Committee on Commodity Problems] (CCP) and subsequently adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2019.{{Cite web |title = FAO welcomes global recognition of fruits, vegetables, tea and food loss and waste |url = https://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/1256182/icode/ |website = The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations |accessdate = 2022-05-21 |archive-date = 2022-05-21 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20220521104718/https://www.fao.org/news/story/en/item/1256182/icode/ |url-status = dead }}
