Ivo Malec (30 March 1925 in Zagreb – 14 August 2019 in Paris) was a Croatian-born French{{cite web|last=Langlois|first=Franck|title=Catalogue of Éditions Salabert|url=http://www.musicologie.org/Biographies/m/malec_ivo.html|publisher=musicologie.org}} composer, music educator and conductor. One of the earliest Yugoslav composers to obtain high international regard, his works have been performed by symphony orchestras throughout Europe and North America.
Biography
Coming from a rather 'classical' background, he met Pierre Schaeffer whom he considers his 'true and only master'; Schaeffer's teachings turned Malec into one of the most important leaders of the Groupe de recherches musicales.{{cite web|last=Culot|first=Hubert|title=Musicweb international|url=http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2005/Apr05/malec_orchestralworks_timpani1C10786.htm}} Since then he dedicated himself to a more radical{{cite web|last=All Music|first=All Music|title=All Music|website=AllMusic|url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/ivo-malec-sonoris-cuasa-ottava-alta-exempla-w124931/review}} style. He received a number of awards including the Grand Prix National de Musique in 1992. He was resident in France since 1955{{cite web|last=Discogs|first=Discogs|title=Discogs|website=Discogs|url=http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ivo+Malec}} and taught at the Paris Conservatoire from 1972 to 1990 where he taught composers such as Édith Canat de Chizy, Denis Dufour,{{cite web|title=Denis Dufour|url=http://www.cdmc.asso.fr/en/compositeurs/biographies/dufour_denis|work=Biography|publisher=Centre de documentation de la musique contemporaine}} Philippe Hurel,{{cite web|last=Hurel|first=Philippe|title=Official site|url=http://www.philippe-hurel.fr/en/accueil.html}} Philippe Leroux and Gerard Pesson.{{cite web|last=Pesson|first=Gerard|title=Official site|url=http://www.mondayeveningconcerts.org/bios/pesson.html|access-date=11 December 2011|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120426043822/http://www.mondayeveningconcerts.org/bios/pesson.html|archive-date=26 April 2012|url-status=dead}} {{See LMST|Ivo|Malec}}
Malec's approach to composition which in ways is similar to that of Denis Dufour or Xenakis is the emphasis on all aspects of sound including texture, density, movement, timbre and notably sonic character and form and the use of sound objects.{{cite web|last=Bick|first=Andreas|title=The Concept of "Sound Object" by Pierre Schaeffer|url=http://silentlistening.wordpress.com/2008/05/09/the-concept-of-%E2%80%9Esound-object%E2%80%9C-objet-sonore-by-pierre-schaeffer/}}
