The Jakarta Stock Exchange bombing was a terrorist attack on the Jakarta Stock Exchange on 13 September 2000.
A car bomb exploded in the basement of the building, triggering a chain of explosions in which a number of cars caught fire. Most of the dead were drivers waiting by their employer's cars. Many had taken cover in their vehicles but suffocated as billowing black smoke engulfed the basement levels.[http://www.abc.net.au/am/stories/s176271.htm Bomb blast in Jakarta stock exchange] ABC Radio September 14, 2000[http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/1500327.stm Two jailed for stock exchange bombing] BBC News August 20, 2001 The bombing suspended trading for two days after the attack and also resulted in a sudden, brief devaluation of the Indonesian rupiah.{{cite web |last1=Fadrik Aziz Firdausi |title=Bom BEJ: Keterlibatan TNI, Tudingan terhadap GAM, dan Kejanggalan |url=https://tirto.id/bom-bej-keterlibatan-tni-tudingan-terhadap-gam-dan-kejanggalan-ehQX |publisher=Tirto.id |access-date=2022-07-26 |language=Indonesian |date=2019-09-13}}
The attack was later claimed by Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian Islamic extremist group with links to al-Qaeda. The group was responsible for several other terrorist attacks in the region, including the Philippine consulate bombing in Jakarta which occurred just a month ago and the Bali bombings in 2002.{{Cite journal |title=Claimed by Jemmah Islamiyah |url=https://www.files.ethz.ch/isn/50173/07_Bali.pdf |journal=}}
