James Shannon (1799–1859) was an Irish American academic, evangelist and second President of the University of Missouri{{cite web | url=http://muarchives.missouri.edu/c-rg1-s1.html | title=biographical note | work=University of Missouri archives | accessdate=2008-01-19}} He was born in Monaghan County, Ireland and educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution.{{cite web|url=http://www.therestorationmovement.com/shannon.htm |title=Biographical Sketch On The Life of James Shannon |work=The Restoration Movement |accessdate=2008-01-19 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20071221234810/http://www.therestorationmovement.com/shannon.htm |archivedate=2007-12-21 }} Shannon was also a co-founder of Columbia College and the first president of Culver-Stockton College. He is buried at the Columbia Cemetery in Columbia, Missouri.
