Hanns was born in Yarloop and moved to Collie in 2005. She was deputy principal of Collie Senior High School prior to entering politics. She had previously been a Shire of Collie councillor, chief executive officer of the Collie Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and board member of the Coal Miners' Welfare Board of Western Australia, the Collie Early Education Centre and St Brigid's School.{{Cite web|date=2020-02-18|title=WA Labor announces Collie-Preston candidate as Mick Murray retires|url=https://www.colliemail.com.au/story/6636069/wa-labor-announces-collie-preston-candidate-as-mick-murray-retires/|access-date=2021-03-13|website=Collie Mail|language=en-AU}}{{cite web | url=https://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/publications/tabledpapers.nsf/displaypaper/4011776a343f3f7721b1e2bd4825830e0005d9e5/$file/1776.pdf | title=Coal Miners' Welfare Board of Western Australia Annual Report 2018 | publisher=Parliament of Western Australia | accessdate=10 April 2021}}
She was elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 2021 election, successfully replacing long-time Labor MP Mick Murray in the usually marginal seat. Labor won the election in a landslide statewide, and the local Liberal campaign was hampered by a controversial proposal to close the Collie power station, resulting in Hanns winning with 73.4% of the two-party preferred vote.{{cite web | url=https://www.abc.net.au/news/elections/wa/2021/guide/coll | title=Collie | publisher=Australian Broadcasting Corporation | accessdate=10 April 2021}}{{cite news | url=https://thewest.com.au/politics/state-election-2021/collie-liberal-candidate-jane-goff-says-kirkups-plan-to-close-coal-power-station-undermined-her-campaign-ng-b881808864z | title=Collie Liberal candidate Jane Goff says Kirkup's plan to close coal power station 'undermined' her campaign | work=The West Australian | date=28 February 2021 | accessdate=10 April 2021}} In her election campaign Hanns received mentoring from Victorian politician, Katie Hall, through EMILY's List Australia.{{Cite web|title=2021 Western Australia Election Candidates|url=https://www.emilyslist.org.au/2021_wa_election_candidates|access-date=2021-03-13|website=EMILY's List Australia|archive-date=10 March 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210310045601/https://www.emilyslist.org.au/2021_wa_election_candidates|url-status=dead}}
