The Journal of Human Evolution is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal that concentrates on publishing the highest quality papers covering all aspects of human evolution. JHE was established in 1972 by Academic Press in the United Kingdom and is currently published by Elsevier. The central focus of JHE is aimed jointly at paleoanthropological work, covering human and primate fossils, and at comparative studies of living species, including both morphological and molecular evidence. These include descriptions of new discoveries, analyses and interpretations of new and previously described material, and assessments of the phylogeny and paleobiology of primate species. In addition to original research papers, space is allocated for the rapid publication of short communications on new discoveries, such as exciting new fossils, as well as lead book reviews, obituaries and review papers of exceptionally high quality.
The journal received a 2023 impact factor of 3.656.{{Cite web|title=World’s largest publisher-neutral citation index and research intelligence platform|url=https://clarivate.com/webofsciencegroup/|access-date=2020-10-23|website=Web of Science Group|language=en-US}}
The editors-in-chief were Andrea B. Taylor (Touro University California, USA) and Mark W. Grabowski (Liverpool John Moores University, England). In December, 2024, the editorial board, including emeritus editors and all but one associate editor, resigned, citing actions by Elsevier that they said "are fundamentally incompatible with the ethos of the journal and preclude maintaining the quality and integrity fundamental to JHE's success".{{cite web | title=Evolution journal editors resign en masse to protest Elsevier changes | website=Retraction Watch | date=December 27, 2024 | url=https://retractionwatch.com/2024/12/27/evolution-journal-editors-resign-en-masse-to-protest-elsevier-changes/ | access-date=December 27, 2024}} Reasons cited by the editors include Elsevier's elimination of a dedicated copy editor position, forced restructuring of the editorial board, and use of generative AI without informing either editors or authors. This use of AI introduced formatting errors, including reintroducing formatting errors that had already been previously corrected by the editors. The resigning editors also noted that JHE charges significantly more to publish than most other journals, including other Elsevier journals.{{cite news |last1=Ouellette |first1=Jennifer |title=Evolution journal editors resign en masse |url=https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/12/journal-editors-resign-to-protest-ai-use-high-fees-and-more/ |access-date=5 January 2025 |work=Ars Technica |date=30 December 2024}}{{cite news |last1=online |first1=heise |title="Highly embarrassing" introduction of AI: editors of science magazine quit |url=https://www.heise.de/en/news/Highly-embarrassing-introduction-of-AI-editors-of-science-magazine-quit-10224275.html |access-date=5 January 2025 |work=Heise Online |publisher=Heise |date=3 January 2025 |language=en}}
