Joyful Noise Recordings is an independent record label with headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. The label was founded in 2003 in Bloomington, Indiana by Karl Hofstetter, who also played drums on several of the label's first releases.{{cite web|url=http://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/contact |title=About / Contact - Joyful Noise Recordings |publisher=JoyfulNoiseRecordings.com |access-date=2012-07-01}} Joyful Noise maintains an active roster of over 30 bands playing various musical styles,{{Cite web|title=Artists {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/pages/artists,%20https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/pages/artists|access-date=2021-11-11|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}}{{Dead link|date=December 2024 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} though according to the label, each artist "in one way or another bridges the gap between pop and noise."
History
In 2010 Joyful Noise began focusing largely on limited-edition specialty releases which are generally released on analog formats packaged with music downloads. In addition to releases on vinyl records, the label has gained notoriety for being at the forefront of the resurgence of cassette tapes and flexi discs, as reported by The Washington Post, Pitchfork Media, Under The Radar, and others.{{cite web|last=Coplen|first=Katherine|title=2013 Cultural Vision Awards: Joyful Noise Recordings|date=5 June 2013 |url=http://www.nuvo.net/indianapolis/2013-cvas-joyful-noise-recordings/Content?oid=2605192|publisher=NUVO|access-date=5 November 2013}}{{cite news|last=Lindquist|first=David|title=Dinosaur Jr. cassette tape helped push local label onto national scene|url=http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2013310060062&nclick_check=1|access-date=5 November 2013|newspaper=Indianapolis Star|date=October 6, 2013}}{{cite news|last=Curran|first=Katie|title=Cassette tapes make a comeback|url=https://articles.washingtonpost.com/2011-05-21/lifestyle/35232396_1_cassette-tapes-animal-collective-deerhoof|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130622210850/http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2011-05-21/lifestyle/35232396_1_cassette-tapes-animal-collective-deerhoof|url-status=dead|archive-date=June 22, 2013|access-date=5 November 2013|newspaper=Washington Post|date=May 21, 2011}}{{cite news|last=Laban|first=Linda|title=Still stuck on tapes|url=https://nypost.com/2011/09/18/still-stuck-on-tapes/|access-date=5 November 2013|newspaper=New York Post|date=September 2011}}{{cite news|last=Pelly|first=Jenn|title=Of Montreal, Tortoise, Akron/Family, Deerhoof on Joyful Noise Flexi Series|url=http://pitchfork.com/news/44975-of-montreal-tortoise-akronfamily-deerhoof-on-joyful-noise-flexi-series/|access-date=5 November 2013|newspaper=Pitchfork|date=January 4, 2012}}
Joyful Noise has released single-album cassettes from Akron/Family, Dinosaur Jr., Deerhoof, of Montreal, Here We Go Magic, and others, and has released multi-album cassette box sets from Dinosaur Jr., of Montreal, and Joan Of Arc.

From 2012 to 2016, in the spirit of continuing to explore musical community-building through the release of cult artists in obsolete audio-reproduction formats, Joyful Noise offered its monthly flexi-disc singles series. Each disc in the series is of peculiar and notable value as a rarity but some particularly memorable entries include Son Lux's cover of Jean Ritchie's "Black Waters", several Melvins and Joan of Arc–related tracks, a duet by Sufjan Stevens and Stranger Cat, Tortoise, Don Caballero and Daniel Johnston.{{Cite web|title=Flexi Disc Series {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/flexi-disc-series|access-date=2020-06-20|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}}{{Cite web|title=It's Thin, It's Plastic, It's Back: Flexi Discs Find New Fans|url=https://www.npr.org/2015/04/18/400369975/its-thin-its-plastic-its-back-flexi-discs-find-new-fans|access-date=2020-06-20|website=NPR.org|language=en}}{{Cite web|title=Joyful Noise announces flextacular 2012 series of flexi disc recordings, featuring Deerhoof, Tortoise, and of Montreal, among others|url=https://www.tinymixtapes.com/news/joyful-noise-announces-flextacular-2012-series-flexi-disc-recordings-featuring-deerhoof-tortois|access-date=2020-06-20|website=Tiny Mix Tapes|language=en}}

In 2013, JNR released the first 7" in their Cause & Effect series—an ongoing project pairing JNR artists (appearing on the A-side) with artists who have influenced them (appearing on the B-side).
In 2014, Joyful Noise started their annual Artist-In-Residence program:{{Cite web|title=Artist In Residence {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/artist-in-residence|access-date=2020-06-20|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}} working with seasoned cult artists to release the "pure-gold material they've got in the cans that's never found a venue for release" and to continue to support their ongoing work. In 2017, Joyful Noise began releasing their White Label series: undiscovered records selected by renowned musicians either represented or friendly with the label. Yoni Wolf of Why? selected Creature Native by The Ophelias as the first entry in the White Label Series and the band was ultimately drafted to become part of the label's roster.{{Cite web|title=White Label Series {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/white-label-series|access-date=2020-06-20|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}} Other curators of the White Label series include Devendra Banhart, Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney), Kelley Deal (The Breeders), Mirah, Aesop Rock, Alex Somers, Blanck Mass, Kid Millions, Meredith Graves, Mike Watt, Serengeti, tUNE-yARDs, Astronautilus, Cate Le Bon, Circuit des Yeux, Julianna Barwick, Sondre Lerche, St. Vincent, and Thurston Moore.
Radical projects & experiments
The label is known for candid identification with and support of radical and revolutionary politics. They released collaborations between Bernie Sanders and Thurston Moore,{{Cite web|title=Thurston Moore & Bernie Sanders {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/thurston-moore-bernie-sanders|access-date=2020-06-20|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}} did fundraising to oppose the first Trump Administration through the release of Anal Trump records{{Cite web|title=Anal Trump {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/anal-trump|access-date=2020-06-20|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}} and stood in solidarity with Black Lives Matter during the George Floyd protests.{{Cite web|title=Solidarity {{!}} Joyful Noise Recordings|url=https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/pages/solidarity|access-date=2020-06-20|website=www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com}}
In 2020, JNR founded the Church of Noise to build and perpetuate musically empowered community during the COVID-19 pandemic and through the long tail of its fallout. In 2021, the label was featured in the New York Times as the only independent label interviewed in pursuit of a solution to the vinyl manufacturing slowdown (by doing lathe cut previews of vinyl albums that might take six months to a year to make it through the manufacturing queue).{{Cite news|last=Sisario|first=Ben|date=2021-10-21|title=Vinyl Is Selling So Well That It's Getting Hard to Sell Vinyl|language=en-US|work=The New York Times|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/21/arts/music/vinyl-records-delays.html|access-date=2021-11-11|issn=0362-4331}} The Church of Noise has continued to evolve, building a sonic plant altar in their sanctuary, hosting art shows and other events.{{Cite web |last=Long |first=Kyle |date=2025-01-23 |title=Interview: Joyful Noise Recordings celebrates late singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston |url=https://www.wfyi.org/news/articles/joyful-noise-recordings-celebrates-late-singer-songwriter-daniel-johnston |access-date=2025-01-26 |website=WFYI Public Media |language=en-us}}
As the major focus of 2022 artist in residence Joyful Noise Recordings devoted resources to launching the sub-label Stone Tapes, an "End of World Music" imprint.{{Cite journal |last=Ruttenberg |first=Jay |date=2022 |title="Yonatan Gat & The Medicine Singers" |url=https://thirdmanrecords.com/collections/magazines/products/issue-8 |journal=Maggot Brain |issue=8}}{{Cite web |title=Cultural Manifesto: Mixing Traditional and Experimental: Medicine Singers on Apple Podcasts |url=https://podcasts.apple.com/am/podcast/mixing-traditional-and-experimental-medicine-singers/id1063423772?i=1000571494842 |access-date=2022-09-18 |website=Apple Podcasts |language=en-GB}}{{Cite magazine |title=Medicine Singers |url=https://www.newyorker.com/goings-on-about-town/night-life/medicine-singers |access-date=2022-09-18 |magazine=The New Yorker |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=Medicine Singers: Medicine Singers |url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/medicine-singers-medicine-singers/ |access-date=2022-09-18 |website=Pitchfork |language=en-US}} Joyful Noise also participated in the resurrection of Shimmy-Disc, run by Kramer, a crucial underground record label responsible for the discovery of a bewildering diversity of now canonical acts such as Low, Gwar, Daniel Johnston, Moldy Peaches and many others.
