History

{{For|further information on the history of Just Eat|Just Eat#History}}

Takeaway.com was created by Jitse Groen in 2000 after he had a difficult time ordering food online from local restaurants. Initially, Groen wanted to deliver all kinds of consumer goods; however, he noticed that food deliveries were subject to the most demand, and decided to make this the company's primary focus.{{Cite news |date=2023-01-18 |title=Takeaway sees stronger profitability in 2023 despite Q4 orders slump |language=en |work=Reuters |url=https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/takeaway-q4-orders-slump-flags-ebitda-24266-mln-2023-2023-01-18/ |access-date=2023-08-30}}Image:TNW Conference 2015 - Day 2 (17242478002) (cropped).jpg

In 2002, co-founder Ruben Eilander left Takeaway because the business was growing too slowly. According to Groen, in these early years, he was relying on his student loans to keep himself financially afloat. Thanks to broadband internet becoming mainstream around 2003, the business started growing, and Groen left his studies to focus on the company.{{Cite web|title='Ik had een idioot lange aanlooptijd nodig'|url=https://www.emerce.nl/nieuws/ik-had-een-idioot-lange-aanlooptijd-nodig-2|access-date=2021-10-03|website=Emerce|language=nl}}{{Cite web|title=Jitse Groen – Oprichter en Algemeen Directeur Thuisbezorgd.nl {{!}}|url=http://www.memorymagazine.nl/the-road-to-success/jitse-groen-oprichter-en-algemeen-directeur-thuisbezorgd-nl/|access-date=2021-10-03|language=en-US}}
