KKAL (92.5 FM, "The Krush 92.5") is a commercial radio station that is licensed to Paso Robles, California and serves the San Luis Obispo area. The station is owned by American General Media and broadcasts an adult album alternative (AAA) radio format.

KKAL is notable due to its linkage to the area's wine industry and culture, both in its imaging (e.g. the "Krush" name, as in crushed grapes) and various wine-related programs that air regularly. The studios and offices are on Sacramento Drive in San Luis Obispo and the transmitter is off TV Tower Road in Santa Margarita.{{cite web |url=https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/patg?id=KKAL-FM |title=KKAL-FM |website=Radio-Locator.com }}

History

=Early years=

KKAL first signed on November 20, 1972 as KPRA, the sister station to KPRL (1230 AM), with a country music format.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Annuals/Archive-BC-YB-IDX/70s-OCR-YB/1977-YB/1977-BC-YB-OCR-Page-0272.pdf |title=Directory of Radio Stations in the United States and Canada |magazine=Broadcasting Yearbook |publisher=Broadcasting Publications Inc. |page=C-25 |date=1977 |access-date=June 29, 2018 }} In December 1982, KPRA switched its call sign to KDDB but kept the country format.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Magazines/Archive-BC-IDX/82-OCR/1982-12-20-BC-OCR-Page-0072.pdf |title=For the Record |magazine=Broadcasting |publisher=Broadcasting Publications Inc. |page=72 |date=December 20, 1982 |access-date=June 29, 2018 }}

In April 1991, Owensville Communications Company sold KDDB to Zindy Broadcasting, headed by Stephen B. Jones, for $350,000.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Magazines/Archive-BC-IDX/91-OCR/BC-1991-04-08-OCR-Page-0061.pdf |title=Changing Hands |magazine=Broadcasting |publisher=Broadcasting Publications Inc. |page=61 |date=April 8, 1991 |access-date=June 29, 2018 }}

In 1997, American General Media purchased KDDB for $675,000.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Annuals/Archive-BC-YB-IDX/00s-OCR-YB/2005-YB/2005-BC-YB-OCR-Page-0392.pdf |title=Directory of Radio Stations in the United States |magazine=Broadcasting and Cable Yearbook |publisher=R.R. In April 2007, KKAL switched formats to hot adult contemporary with the new moniker "The Krush @ 92.5". This branding is inspired by the surrounding Paso Robles wine country, conjuring up images of the vineyards that host wine tasting tours that have grown in popularity.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Music/Archive-RandR-IDX/IDX/00s/07/RR-2007-04-20-OCR-Page-0012.pdf |title=Formats You'll Flip Over |magazine=Radio & Records |page=12 |date=April 20, 2007 |access-date=June 29, 2018 }}{{cite news |url=https://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/23700/kkal-flips-to-hot-ac |title=KKAL Flips To Hot AC |website=All Access |publisher=All Access Music Group |date=April 12, 2007 |access-date=June 29, 2018 }}
