KZOZ (93.3 FM) is a commercial radio station that is licensed to and serves San Luis Obispo, California. The station is owned by American General Media and broadcasts a classic rock format.

History

The station's first license was granted in 1962 to John C. Cohan with the call letters {{nowrap|KVEC-FM}}.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Annuals/Archive-BC-YB-IDX/60s-OCR-YB/1964-YB/1964-BC-YB-OCR-Page-0196.pdf |title=Directory of AM and FM Radio Stations in the U.S. |magazine=Broadcasting Yearbook |publisher=Broadcasting Publications Inc. |page=B-22 |date=1964 |access-date=July 18, 2018 }} In November 1965, Cohan sold {{nowrap|KVEC-FM}} and its AM counterpart to West Coast Broadcasters Inc., owner of TV station KSBY (channel 6) in San Luis Obispo, for $360,000.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Magazines/Archive-BC-IDX/65-OCR/1965-11-08-BC-OCR-Page-0039.pdf |title=Changing hands |magazine=Broadcasting |publisher=Broadcasting Publications Inc. |page=49 |date=November 8, 1965 |access-date=July 18, 2018 }} The new owner then changed the FM station's call sign to KSBY-FM.

In June 1975, KSBY-FM changed its call sign to KZOZ.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Magazines/Archive-BC-IDX/75-OCR/1975-06-16-BC-OCR-Page-0055.pdf |title=For the Record |magazine=Broadcasting |publisher=Broadcasting Publications Inc. |page=57 |date=June 16, 1975 |access-date=July 18, 2018 }} At the time, the station was branded as "KZOZ Stereo 93" and aired an album-oriented rock format.

The 1980s brought several major changes at the station. On June 17, 1980, KZOZ adjusted its call sign to KZOZ-FM{{cite web |url=https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/call_hist.pl?Facility_id=36025&Callsign=KZOZ |title=Call Sign History: KZOZ |website=FCC Media Bureau CDBS Public Access |publisher=Federal Communications Commission |access-date=July 18, 2018 }} and flipped to top 40 with the branding "Z93". The station reverted to the KZOZ call letters on November 10, 1986. In December 1987, Phoenix Broadcasting Company sold KZOZ and then-sister station KKAL to Tattersall-Commonwealth Broadcasters Company for $3,615,000.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Music/Archive-RandR-IDX/IDX/80s/88/RR-1988-01-08-OCR-Page-0010.pdf |title=Year End Deals Boost 1987 Action To $2.67 Billion |magazine=Radio & Records |page=10 |date=January 8, 1988 |access-date=July 18, 2018 }} The combo changed hands again in February 1989, when Tattersall-Commonwealth sold the pair to Anthony Brandon and L. Rogers Brandon for $2 million.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Music/Archive-RandR-IDX/IDX/80s/89/RR-1989-02-24-OCR-Page-0010.pdf |title=TA Associates, Shaw United In $75 Million Radio Buyout |magazine=Radio & Records |page=10 |date=February 24, 1989 |access-date=July 18, 2018 }} The Brandons' radio company would later be known as American General Media.

On October 14, 1991, KZOZ switched formats from top 40 to classic rock, dropping its longtime "Z93" branding.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Music/Archive-RandR-IDX/IDX/90s/91/RR-1991-10-18-OCR-Page-0034.pdf |title=FCC To Probe WHFS? |magazine=Radio & Records |page=34 |date=October 18, 1991 |access-date=June 18, 2019 }}

In 2003, KZOZ hired David Atwood as programming director. Atwood adjusted the station's music library in an active rock direction, adding newer songs alongside the existing classic rock as a response to the rise of modern rock rival KURQ. In the Arbitron fall 2004 radio ratings survey, KZOZ finished in first place in the San Luis Obispo market in the 12+ demographic.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Business/Music/Archive-RandR-IDX/IDX/00s/05/RR-2005-03-25-OCR-Page-0061.pdf |last=Anthony |first=Ken |title=They're No. 1! |magazine=Radio & Records |page=59 |date=March 25, 2005 |access-date=July 18, 2018 }}

As of July 2018, programming on KZOZ includes Jeff & Jeremy, a local morning show that has aired since February 2006,{{cite news |url=https://www.allaccess.com/rock/10-questions/archive/23203/10-questions-with-jeff-kingman-jeremy-west |title=10 Questions with ...
