Biography

Riepl was born in Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey. His interest in music started at the age of six, when he began to play piano and guitar under the instruction of his uncle.{{cite web|url=http://epicgames.com/community/2012/10/maestros-of-horror-and-sci-fi-music-kevin-riepl-at-nycc/|title=Maestros of Horror and Sci-Fi Music – Kevin Riepl at NYCC|publisher=Epic Games|date=October 4, 2012|accessdate=13 August 2014|author=Flak|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141015054809/http://epicgames.com/community/2012/10/maestros-of-horror-and-sci-fi-music-kevin-riepl-at-nycc/|archive-date=October 15, 2014|url-status=dead}} In the fourth grade he began studies on the trumpet and piano and that continued throughout his high school years in which he was a member of a variety of bands and orchestras.{{cite web|url=http://www.thesoundarchitect.co.uk/kevinriepl/|title=Interview With Battleborn And Batman Unlimited Composer Kevin Riepl!|publisher=The Sound Architect|date=11 May 2016|accessdate=29 May 2016|first=Sam|last=Hughes}} After high school, he began private independent studies in composition and orchestration at the Village East Conservatory of Music. Following the years at the conservatory and few scoring projects, he attended Mannes College of Music in New York City for further education in composition and orchestration.{{cite web|url=http://filmandgamecomposers.com/interviews/kevin-riepl-2/|title=Composer Interview – Kevin Riepl|publisher=Filmandgamecomposers|date=December 31, 2008|accessdate=13 August 2014|first=Emmett|last=Cooke}}

Riepl began his career working as an assistant and co-writing partner for Kevin Manthei in the early 2000s.{{cite web|url=http://www.vgmonline.net/kevinrieplinterview/|title=Kevin Riepl Interview: Raw Interactive Scoring|publisher=Game Music Online|date=14 August 2010|accessdate=21 August 2014|first=Chris|last=Greening}} At the time, Cliff Bleszinski, former design director at Epic Games, who was then looking for a different musical sound for the Unreal franchise, played his demo reel. This led him to work on Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Championship 2.{{cite web|url=http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/55405/exclusive-interview-composer-kevin-riepl-discusses-aliens-colonial-marines-and-resistance#axzz39omSScR3|title=Exclusive Interview: Composer Kevin Riepl Discusses Aliens Colonial Marines and Resistance: Burning Skies|publisher=Dread Central|date=8 May 2012|accessdate=27 August 2014|first=Amanda|last=Dyar}} In February 2005, Riepl became attached to Gears of War. Initially, he was asked to write the main themes for the game, but after submitting the pieces he had written, Epic liked what he created and signed him on to create the entire score.{{cite web|url=http://www.ign.com/articles/2006/11/29/gears-of-war-composer-interview|title=Gears of War Composer Interview|publisher=IGN|date=29 November 2006|accessdate=19 August 2014|first=D.|last=Spence}} In March 2007, Riepl recorded the score for the massively multiplayer first-person shooter computer game Huxley, developed by Webzen Games.{{cite web|url=http://scoringsessions.com/news/85/|title=Kevin Riepl Scores a Brave New World of Video Game Music in Huxley|publisher=Scoring Sessions|date=19 March 2007|accessdate=9 October 2014|first=Dan|last=Goldwasser}}{{cite web|url=http://company.webzen.com/eng/press/report/read.asp?bbs_seq=79&page=5 |title=Acclaimed Composer Kevin Riepl Scores Webzen's MMOFPS Huxley |publisher=Webzen Games |date=4 October 2007 |accessdate=9 October 2014 |author=Webzen Games |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140819085149/http://company.webzen.com/eng/press/report/read.asp?bbs_seq=79&page=5 |archivedate=August 19, 2014 }}

In October 2010, Riepl suffered a sudden heart failure and was hospitalized. He had a pump installed in his heart until a donor heart could replace it, and underwent the heart transplant in July 2011. Shortly afterwards, a rare tumor was found on his adrenal gland, which was affecting his blood pressure. He has since made a good recovery.{{cite web|title=Heart transplant patient becomes unexpected ambassador for organ donation|url=http://www.news-medical.net/news/20121229/Heart-transplant-patient-becomes-unexpected-ambassador-for-organ-donation.aspx|website=News Medical|date=December 29, 2012 |accessdate=20 November 2016}}

In addition to his work on the video game industry, Riepl has composed for films and television series, including his recent scores for horror films such as Silent Night, Contracted and the Cabin Fever films (Patient Zero and the 2016 film remake).{{cite web|url=http://bggafterdark.biogamergirl.com/2014/07/exclusive-interview-kevin-riepl-discusses-cabin-fever-patient-zero.html|title=Exclusive Interview: Kevin Riepl Discusses Cabin Fever: Patient Zero|publisher=BCC After Dark|date=July 2014|accessdate=9 October 2014|first=Amanda|last=Dyar|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141014203032/http://bggafterdark.biogamergirl.com/2014/07/exclusive-interview-kevin-riepl-discusses-cabin-fever-patient-zero.html|archivedate=October 14, 2014|df=mdy-all}}{{cite web|url=http://www.jmhdigital.com/2014/06/interview-with-composer-kevin-riepl.html|title=Interview with Composer...
