Klazienaveen is a town to the southeast of Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located approx {{convert|5|km|mi|abbr=on}} from the German border. Klazienaveen started as a peat colony owned by Willem Albert Scholten. It has been named after Klaassien Sluis, the wife of Scholten.
History

In 1899, a village appeared along the canal. In 1903, Scholten's son Jan Evert renamed Smeulveen and the village Klazienaveen after his mother Klaassien Sluis.{{cite book |url=https://dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu07_01/sten009monu07_01_0051.php |title=Klazienaveen |author=Ronald Stenvert |year=2001 |publisher=Waanders Uitgevers |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9454 3 |language=nl |access-date=5 March 2022 |page=140}} It is one of the two villages in the Netherlands named after a non-royal woman.{{cite web|url=https://plaatsengids.nl/klazienaveen |title=Klazienaveen |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=5 March 2022 |language=nl}} In 1932, it was home to 2,327 people.{{cite book|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/boeken/view?objectsearch=Klazienaveen&coll=boeken&identifier=MMKB24:079834000:00093&query=erica+emmen |title=In en om de gemeente Emmen |year=1935 |author=Jan Harm Tuntler |publisher=Ten Kate |language=nl |page=89}}
