Koto (hiragana: 20px, katakana: ヿ) is one of the Japanese kana. It is a polysyllabic kana which represents two morae. Both the hiragana and katakana forms represent {{IPA|[koto]}}. 20px is a combination (ligature) of the hiragana graphs of ko (こ) and to (と), while ヿ originates from the Chinese character 事.
The katakana koto is as a shorthand used in {{nihongo|shinkatakana|真片仮名}} (an obsolete writing style that exclusively used katakana instead of hiragana).{{cite book |author=福澤諭吉 |author-link=Fukuzawa Yukichi |author2=中上川彦次郎 |author-link2=:ja:中上川彦次郎 |date=1882-05-13 |script-title=ja:帝室論 |url={{NDLDC|783521|/1/3|format=url}} |publisher=時事新報社 |trans-title=imperial theory |language=ja |doi=10.11501/783521 |id={{NDLPID|783521}} |ref={{Harvid|福澤|1882}}}}{{Cite web|title=鐵道略則 - Wikisource|url=https://ja.wikisource.org/wiki/%E9%90%B5%E9%81%93%E7%95%A5%E5%89%87|website=ja.wikisource.org|accessdate=2020-01-18}}
