Background

In 2014, Jenner and her mother Kris Jenner founded Kylie Cosmetics in partnership with Seed Beauty.{{Cite news|url=https://www.shopify.com/blog/214945353-seed-beauty-kylie-cosmetics|title=Powering the Pout: The (Other) Woman Behind Kylie Cosmetics|work=Shopify's Ecommerce Blog - Ecommerce News, Online Store Tips & More|access-date=2018-05-15|language=en}} The company's first product named Lip Kits, consisting of a liquid lipstick and lip liner, were released on November 30, 2015. The first 15,000 lip kits were produced by Seed Beauty and funded by Jenner at a cost of $250,000 from her modelling earnings. The company was renamed Kylie Cosmetics in February 2016, and production was increased to 500,000 kits. By the end of 2016, the company's total revenue was over $300 million.

Jenner has used her former insecurity about her lip size as an inspiration for the brand, saying, "It's the most authentic thing I've done in my career".{{cite web|url=https://www.teenvogue.com/story/kylie-jenner-lip-insecurity-kylie-cosmetics|title=How Kylie Jenner's Lip issues Inspired Her to Launch Kylie Cosmetics|first=Zoë|last=Weiner|website=Teenvogue.com|date=2 May 2018 |access-date=26 May 2018}} Many attribute the brand's success to Jenner's cosmetically altered lips.{{cite web |last=Schaefer |first=Kayleen |date=21 October 2016 |title=Kylie Jenner Built a Business Empire out of Lip Kits and Fan Worship |url=https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2016/10/kylie-jenner-lip-kits-seed-beauty-colourpop |website=Vanityfair.com}}

=Packaging=

File:Kylie_Lip_Kit_box_redesign.jpgIn May 2016, Kylie Cosmetics changed the packaging of its Lip Kits due to complaints of theft. Due to the easily recognizable packaging and high demand for the product at the time, some customers received empty boxes after having their products stolen in the mailing process. The original Kylie Lip Kit box was black with a white lip gloss drip design. In order to solve the theft issue, the boxes were changed to a basic black, and the recognizable dripping lip gloss design was moved to the inside of the box.{{cite web|url=https://www.teenvogue.com/story/kylie-jenner-lip-kit-package-redesign|title=This Is What the New Kylie Lip Kit Boxes Look Like|first=Andrea|last=Navarro|website=Teenvogue.com|date=23 May 2016 |access-date=26 May 2018}}

In the April 2018 release of the Kourt X Kylie Collection, Kylie Cosmetics included eyeshadow palettes with brand new plastic packaging rather than the traditional cardboard packaging.{{cite web|url=http://www.revelist.com/beauty-news-/kylie-cosmetics-packaging/12476|title=Kylie finally upgraded her makeup packaging to feel less cheap|website=Revelist.com}}

While Jenner or members of her family often serve as models of Kylie Cosmetics, the pair of lips that advertise the Lip Kits themselves belong to beauty and lifestyle blogger Ashley Rosales. Criticism

= Expensive brush set =

In an occurrence dubbed by Cosmopolitan Australia as the "Kylie makeup brush scandal of 2017", Jenner received backlash from fans, makeup gurus, and Internet users alike after Kylie Cosmetics launched a set of 16 luxury makeup brushes, priced at $360.{{cite web|url=https://www.cosmopolitan.com.au/beauty/kylie-jenner-360-makeup-brushes-review-25319|title=The 6 Meanest Things Critics Have Said About Kylie Jenner's $360 Makeup Brushes|website=Cosmopolitan|access-date=26 May 2018}} After a few prominent YouTubers, including James Charles and Jeffree Star weighed in with their negative opinions on the price of the brush kit, Jenner responded via her personal Twitter, telling fans, "I hear you guys."{{cite web|url=http://www.thisisinsider.com/kylie-jenner-makeup-brushes-complaints-responses-2017-12|title=Kylie Jenner responds to fans who complained her $360 'luxury' makeup brush set was way too expensive|website=Thisinsider.com|date=8 December 2017 }}

= Concealer controversy =

After the release of their concealer line, named Skin Concealer, Kylie Cosmetics received negative feedback from Internet users who claimed the company was copying Rihanna’s makeup line, Fenty Beauty. Though the intention of the makeup line was to remain inclusive, it was assumed by some that Jenner was profiting from diversity by including 30 shades in her concealer line.{{cite web|url=https://www.buzzfeed.com/danielacadena/people-are-accusing-kylie-jenner-of-copying-rihannas-makeup|title=People Are Accusing Kylie Jenner Of Copying Rihanna's Makeup Line|website=Buzzfeed.com|date=8 December 2017 }}

It was also observed that all of the darker shades had red undertones, as explicitly described on the Kylie Cosmetics website, prompting the criticism that it did not cater to all skin types.{{cite web|author=Battle, Marquaysa|url=http://www.revelist.com/makeup/kylie-jenner-concealer-dark/11133/and-the-red-undertone-issue-is-more-than-mere-speculation-according-to-the-kylie-cosmetics-website-all-of-the-deep-dark-concealer-shades-are-meant-for-red-undertones-check-out-the-description-screenshots/9|title=Kylie Jenner's 'inclusive' concealer ignores one important fact about dark skin|website=Revelist|date=January 9, 2018|access-date=August 17, 2020}}

= Eyeshadow Palette controversy =

Back in 2017, Kylie Cosmetics received backlash after clients began reporting a strange and concerning smell from the brand's Royal Peach Eyeshadow Palette. This pungent smell was described as having a "chemical and glue" smell, with many comparing it to "spray paint" and "paint thinner".{{Cite web |last=Pham |first=Jason |date=2017-12-24 |title=7 Shocking Kylie Cosmetics Scandals that Might Make You Stop Shopping There |url=https://stylecaster.com/beauty/kylie-jenner-cosmetics-gross-scandals/ |access-date=2023-02-28 |website=StyleCaster |language=en-US}}

= Provocative names =

The release of Kylie Cosmetics' March 2018 line of blushes sparked anger among some fans who thought that the names of some of the new products, such as "Barely Legal", "Virginity", "X Rated", and "Hot and Bothered", were too provocative, especially for Jenner's younger fans.{{cite web|url=https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/kylie-jenner-slammed-fans-after-12186674|title=Fans fuming over what Kylie Jenner has named latest makeup product|first=Seamus|last=Duff|date=14 March 2018|website=Mirror|access-date=26 May 2018}}

= Company overvaluation =

On April 8, 2020, Forbes again named Jenner as the world's youngest "self made" billionaire, citing her net worth having increased to $1.2 billion.{{Cite web|title=Kylie Jenner is named Forbes youngest self made billionaire for a second year in a row|url=https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/entertainment/a32077479/kylie-jenner-forbes-youngest-self-made-billionaire|website=cosmopolitan|date=8 April 2020 |language=en}} However, in May, Forbes released a statement accusing Jenner of forging tax documents so she would appear as a billionaire. The publication also accused her of fabricating revenue figures for Kylie Cosmetics, citing documents Coty Inc (which had acquired a majority stake in Kylie Cosmetics) had released. The Forbes article concluded that Kylie Cosmetics was significantly smaller and less profitable than previously reported.{{Cite web|last1=Peterson-Withorn|first1=Chase|last2=Berg|first2=Madeline|date=May 29, 2020|title=Inside Kylie Jenner's Web Of Lies—And Why She's No Longer A Billionaire|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/chasewithorn/2020/05/29/inside-kylie-jennerss-web-of-lies-and-why-shes-no-longer-a-billionaire/#791af1b625f7|access-date=May 29, 2020|website=Forbes}}
