History
In 1891, L'Illustration became the first French newspaper to publish a photograph. Many of these photographs came from syndicated photo-press agencies like Chusseau-Flaviens, but the publication also employed its own photographers such as Léon Gimpel and others. In 1907, L'Illustration was the first to publish a color photograph. It also published Gaston Leroux' novel Le mystère de la chambre jaune as a serial a year before its 1908 release. La Petite Illustration was the name of the supplement to L'Illustration that published fiction, plays, and other arts-related material.{{sfn | L'Illustration | 1933}}
During the Second World War, while it was owned by the Baschet family, L'Illustration supported Marshal Philippe Pétain's Révolution nationale, but turned down pro-German articles by French aristocrat and diplomat Jacques Bouly de Lesdain. However, Lesdain later became its political editor.{{cite book | title=National Regeneration in Vichy France: Ideas and Policies, 1930-1944 | first=Debbie | last=Lackerstein | publisher=Ashgate |date=March 2012 | isbn=978-0754667216 | page=210}}{{cite book|editor1-last=Betz |editor1-first= Albrecht |editor2-last=Martens |editor2-first= Stefan |last1=Lambauer |first1= Barbara |chapter=Otto Abetz, inspirateur et catalyseur de la collaboration culturelle |title=Les intellectuels et l'Occupation, 1940-1944|date=2004|publisher=Autrement|location=Paris|isbn=9782746705401|pages=64–89|chapter-url=http://www.cairn.info/les-intellectuels-et-l-occupation--9782746705401-page-64.htm|access-date=October 4, 2016|via=Cairn.info|chapter-url-access=registration }}
