Labial–uvular consonant
{{Short description|Consonant that is doubly articulated at the lips and the uvula}}
Labial–uvular consonants (also labio-uvular consonants) are doubly articulated consonants that occur at two places of articulation, the lips and the uvula. They have been attested in Lese, a Mangbutu-Efe language spoken in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.{{Cite journal |last=Didier Demolin, Bernard Teston |date=September 1997 |title=Phonetic characteristics of double articulations in some Mangbutu-Efe languages |url=https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00239376/file/662.pdf |journal=International Speech Communication Association |pages=803–806}}{{Cite book |last=Güldemann |first=Tom |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=uUeHDwAAQBAJ&dq=%22lese%22+language+%22labial-uvular%22+plosive&pg=PT635 |title=The Languages and Linguistics of Africa |date=2018-09-10 |publisher=Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG |isbn=978-3-11-042175-0 |language=en}}{{Cite book |last=Vorbichler |first=Anton |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=cdZHAAAAMAAJ&q=Die+Phonologie+und+Morphologie+des+Balese+(Ituri-Urwald,+Kongo) |title=Die Phonologie und Morphologie des Balese (Ituri-Urwald, Kongo) |date=1965 |publisher=J.J. Labial–uvular stops
{{Further|Voiceless labial–uvular plosive}}
One labial–uvular stop is attested, {{IPA|[q͜p]}}, and it is present in the Lese language, occurring as an allophone of {{IPA|/q͜ɓ/}}, which is mostly likely another labial–uvular stop with significant lowering and a strong release. The standard labial–uvular stop is also found in Iha.{{Cite book |last=Al-Gariri |first=Husam Saeed Salem Al-Gariri |title=Prenasalized Stops in Iha: an acoustic analysis of allophonic variation |publisher=University of Amsterdam |year=2022 | url=https://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/archive/2022/2022-MA-HusamAlGariri.pdf}}Flassy, Don A.L. and Lisidius Animung. 1992.
