Ladaniva ({{Langx|hy|Լադանիվա}}; stylized in all caps, named in reference to the off-road SUV Lada Niva) is a French-Armenian world music group originally from Lille. The duo, founded in 2019, consists of Armenian singer Jaklin Baghdasaryan and French multi-instrumentalist Louis Thomas. Their musical style is inspired by music from around the world, particularly traditional Balkan music, maloya and Armenian folklore. They represented {{Esccnty|Armenia|y=2024}} in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 with the song "Jako".

History

Ladaniva was formed in 2019 in Lille as a result of the collaboration between singer Jaklin Baghdasaryan and multi-instrumentalist Louis Thomas.{{cite web|url=https://www.europavox.com/fr/bands/ladaniva/|title=Ladaniva|website=europavox|last=Lecoq|first=Noémie|date=22 September 2020|access-date=12 September 2023|language=fr-FR|archive-date=4 October 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231004112506/https://www.europavox.com/fr/bands/ladaniva/|url-status=live}} Baghdasaryan, born in 1997 in Yeghegnadzor, Armenia, grew up in Minsk, Belarus, before emigrating to France with her mother in 2014. She has been singing since her early childhood and, based in Tourcoing, enrolled at the Conservatoire de Lille. Thomas, born in 1987 in Lille and an accomplished jazz musician from a family of musicians, also attended the conservatory. One evening in 2018, they met by chance during a jam session in a music bar in Vieux-Lille, l'Intervalle.{{cite web|url=https://www.radiofrance.fr/franceinter/podcasts/nouvelles-tetes/nouvelles-tetes-du-lundi-11-septembre-2023-3123083|title=Ladaniva|website=radiofrance|date=11 September 2023|access-date=12 September 2023|language=fr-FR|archive-date=12 September 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230912210045/https://www.radiofrance.fr/franceinter/podcasts/nouvelles-tetes/nouvelles-tetes-du-lundi-11-septembre-2023-3123083|url-status=live}}

In March and April 2020, while many countries hit by the COVID-19 pandemic were in lockdown, Ladaniva published two music videos, "Vay Aman" and "Zepyuri Nman", which met with great success, particularly with the Armenian community. Later, in September 2024, they published their music video "Kef Chilini", which reached 18 million views in a few months.{{cite web|url=https://www.telerama.fr/sortir/ladavina-le-phenomene-de-la-pop-balkanique-aux-18-millions-de-vues-6998143.php|title=Ladaniva, le phénomène de la pop balkanique aux 18 millions de vues|last=Berthod|first=Anne|website=telerama|date=28 October 2021|access-date=12 September 2023|language=fr-FR|archive-date=21 September 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230921191027/https://www.telerama.fr/sortir/ladavina-le-phenomene-de-la-pop-balkanique-aux-18-millions-de-vues-6998143.php|url-status=live}} In 2023, Ladaniva released their first album, which is self-titled, produced and distributed by PIAS.{{cite web|url=https://www.pias.com/ladaniva-debut-album-announcement/ |title=World-pop trailblazers Ladaniva today release single 'Je Voulais' and announce their upcoming debut album due in September |publisher=PIAS |website=pias.com |date=12 July 2023|access-date=4 November 2023|language=en-EN}}
