The Laietani or Laeetani were an ancient Iberian (Pre-Roman) people of the Iberian Peninsula (the Roman Hispania). They inhabited the area occupied by the city of Barcelona. One of the main thoroughfares of the city, Via Laietana, is named after the Laietani. They are believed to have spoken an Iberian language.

Name

Iberian coins, with the inscription laieśken in northeastern Iberian script, dating from the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE, are interpreted as minted by the Laietani, and bearing an endonym of that people in the Iberian language: from the Laietani or from those of Laie. A minority view takes the ś to be part of the name.{{Cite conference| publisher = Museu de l'Estampació de Premià de Mar| isbn = 978-84-615-7847-4| conference = La moneda de los íberos: Ilturo y los talleres layetanos | pages = 34| last = Ferrer i Jané| first = Joan| title = La lengua de las leyendas monetales ibéricas |year= 2012| conference-url = https://www.academia.edu/1519711/La_moneda_de_los_%C3%ADberos_Ilturo_y_los_talleres_layetanos }} Conventionally, seven other types of coins have been catalogued as Laietanian,{{cite-book| publisher = Institut d'Estudis Catalans| isbn = 978-84-9965-080-7| last1 = Villaronga| first1 = Leandre| last2 = Benages| first2 = Jaume| title = Ancient coinage of the Iberian Peninsula = Les monedes de l'edat antiga a la Península Ibèrica : Greek, Punic, Iberian, Roman| year = 2022 |url=https://publicacions.iec.cat/PopulaFitxa.do?moduleName=cataleg&subModuleName=cerca_avanzada&idCatalogacio=15328 |page=237ff}} but without a firm connection, as their places of minting are usually unknown.{{Cite journal| last = Sinner| first = Alejandro G.| title = La difusión de las emisiones ibéricas layetanas| journal = Saguntum| access-date = 2025-01-24| date = 2013-01-01| url = https://www.academia.edu/5666620/La_difusi%C3%B3n_de_las_emisiones_ib%C3%A9ricas_layetanas}} In addition, the name is attested in a few inscriptions. Ancient geographers and writers that have written about the area used a greater variety of names, including Laletani/Laletanum, Lasetani and Lacetani (or at least their manuscript traditions do). Modern editors tend to emend those writings based on the epigraphic evidence, while Lacetani is connected with the other Iberian people of Iacetani.{{cite book |title=Brill's New Pauly : encyclopaedia of the ancient world : Antiquity |date=2002 |publisher=Leiden ; Boston : Brill |isbn=978-90-04-12259-8 |page=164 |section=Laeetani |section-url-access=registration |section-url= https://archive.org/details/brillsnewpaulyen0007unse/page/n135/}}{{cite book |editor-last1=Pauly |editor-first1=August Fr |editor-last2=Wissowa |editor-first2=Georg |editor-last3=Kroll |editor-first3=Wilhelm |author1-first=Adolf |author1-last=Schulten |author1-link=Adolf Schulten |title=Paulys Realencyclopadie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft: neue Bearbeitung |volume=Bd.12 1 |isbn=978-3-476-01044-5 |language=de |chapter=Laeetani |page=399 |year=1924}}{{Cite book| publisher = W.
