{{dict|date=May 2023}}

A layer is the deposition of molecules on a substrate or base (glass, ceramic, semiconductor, or plastic/bioplastic).

High temperature substrates includes stainless steel and polyimide film (expensive) {{cite journal | hdl=2128/14543 | hdl-access=free | url=http://juser.fz-juelich.de/record/830198/files/Energie%20%2B%20Umwelt%20377%20Wilken.pdf | title=Low temperature thin-film silicon solar cells on flexible plastic substrates | publisher=Forschungszentrum, Zentralbibliothek | last=Wilken | first=Karen | journal=Advances in Systems Analysis | year=2017 | volume=377 | isbn=978-3-95806-235-1 | issn=1866-1793 | oclc=1075618416}} and PET (cheap).

A depth of less than one micrometre is generally called a thin film while a depth greater than one micrometre is called a coating.

A web is a flexible substrate.
