Wright returned as Shuri for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which depicts Shuri becoming the new Black Panther following the death of T'Challa; the film marked her first leading role. Released in November 2022, the film was made in honor of Chadwick Boseman, who died from colon cancer in 2020. During the filming of a chase sequence in August 2021, she fractured her shoulder and suffered a concussion following a motorcycle accident, causing production to pause while she recuperated.
Personal life
Wright has opened up about her struggles with depression. She told Vanity Fair in 2018 that when she first experienced depression at the age of 20, she "was in the dark going through so many bad things". Wright credits her Christian faith, which she discovered after attending a London actors' Bible study meeting, with helping her overcome the depression. To focus on her recovery and her faith, she turned down film roles. She later explained she "needed to take a break from acting" and "went on a journey to discover my relationship with God, and I became a Christian."{{Cite news |url=https://relevantmagazine.com/culture/black-panther-breakout-star-letitia-wright-shares-testimony-british-talk-show/ |title='Black Panther' Breakout Star Letitia Wright Shares How Christianity Changed Her Life |work=RELEVANT Magazine |date=21 February 2018 |access-date=3 March 2018 |language=en-US |archive-date=25 April 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210425114224/https://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/black-panther-breakout-star-letitia-wright-shares-testimony-british-talk-show/ |url-status=live }}
In December 2020, Wright generated controversy from media for sharing a video from the YouTube channel On The Table on Twitter, in which Tomi Arayomi, a senior leader with the Light London church, questioned the legitimacy of the COVID-19 vaccine and accused China of having spread COVID-19, amongst other statements; the video was later deleted.{{Cite web |title='Black Panther' Star Letitia Wright Responds After Posting Anti-Vax Video |url=https://variety.com/2020/film/global/black-panther-letitia-wright-anti-vax-video-1234846206/ |work=variety.com |first=Naman |last=Ramachandran |date=4 December 2020 |access-date=10 February 2021 |archive-date=17 February 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210217224843/https://variety.com/2020/film/global/black-panther-letitia-wright-anti-vax-video-1234846206/ |url-status=live }} Wright later clarified, "My intention was not to hurt anyone, my ONLY intention of posting the video was it raised my concerns with what the vaccine contains and what we are putting in our bodies. In October 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Wright had parted ways with her U.S. team of representatives due to the response of the video and her alleged promotion of "anti-vaccine" sentiments on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.{{Cite web |last1=Siegel |first1=Tatiana |last2=Gardner |first2=Chris |last3=Kit |first3=Borys |date=6 October 2021 |title=Hollywood Battle Lines Emerge in Simmering Vaccine War |url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/covid-vaccine-mandate-hollywood-1235026178/ |access-date=6 October 2021 |website=The Hollywood Reporter |language=en-US |archive-date=6 October 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211006140451/https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/covid-vaccine-mandate-hollywood-1235026178/ |url-status=live }} Wright returned to social media to deny these claims.{{Cite web|url=https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-10-13/black-panther-letitia-wright-says-report-on-anti-vax-conduct-completely-untrue|title='Black Panther's' Letitia Wright says report on anti-vax conduct 'completely untrue'|website=Los Angeles Times|first=Nardine|last=Saad|date=13 October 2021|access-date=14 April 2022|archive-date=4 April 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220404165027/https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-10-13/black-panther-letitia-wright-says-report-on-anti-vax-conduct-completely-untrue|url-status=live}}{{Cite web |url=https://news.yahoo.com/completely-untrue-black-panther-star-172200437.html |title='Completely Untrue': 'Black Panther' Star Letitia Wright Hits Back at Reports That She was Spreading Anti-Vax Views on Set |first=Atahabih|last= Germain|website=news.yahoo.com |date=14 October 2021 |access-date=17 November 2022 |archive-date=11 November 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221111004956/https://news.yahoo.com/completely-untrue-black-panther-star-172200437.html |url-status=live }} Wright's Wakanda Forever co-star Angela Bassett stated that she had never heard Wright share anti-vaccine sentiments during filming, while Marvel vice president Nate Moore claimed that she was not sharing her views on set and that her status did not affect production.{{Cite web |last1=Jackson |first1=Angelique |last2=Vary |first2=Adam B. |title=Rebuilding 'Black Panther': How the 'Wakanda Forever' Family Fought Through Grief and Injury to Create a $250 Million Superhero Tribute |url=https://variety.com/2022/film/news/black-panther-wakanda-forever-ryan-coogler-interview-grief-injury-mcu-1235425858/ |website=variety.com |date=2022-11-09 |access-date=2022-11-13 |language=en-US |archive-date=9 November 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221109190512/https://variety.com/2022/film/news/black-panther-wakanda-forever-ryan-coogler-interview-grief-injury-mcu-1235425858/ |url-status=live }} Later that month, Wright condemned The Hollywood Reporter for an article that included her amongst awards-season prospects with "personal baggage", in which its author Scott Feinberg compared her past comments with men accused of abuse and sexual misconduct.{{Cite web |last=Young |first=Matt |date=22 November 2022 |title=Letitia Wright Slams 'Personal Baggage' Story: 'This Is Vile' |url=https://www.thedailybeast.com/black-panther-star-letitia-wright-slams-the-hollywood-reporters-personal-baggage-story-calling-it-vile |website=The Daily Beast |access-date=23 November 2022 |archive-date=22 November 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221122182123/https://www.thedailybeast.com/black-panther-star-letitia-wright-slams-the-hollywood-reporters-personal-baggage-story-calling-it-vile |url-status=live }} She reiterated that she had already apologised for her comments two years prior and had remained silent on the topic, and accused both the publication and Feinberg of having an "agenda" against her, which she described as "vile" and "disgusting" behaviour.{{Cite web |last=Young |first=Matt |date=22 November 2022 |title=Letitia Wright Slams 'Personal Baggage' Story: 'This Is Vile' |url=https://www.thedailybeast.com/black-panther-star-letitia-wright-slams-the-hollywood-reporters-personal-baggage-story-calling-it-vile |website=The Daily Beast |access-date=23 November 2022 |archive-date=22 November 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221122182123/https://www.thedailybeast.com/black-panther-star-letitia-wright-slams-the-hollywood-reporters-personal-baggage-story-calling-it-vile |url-status=live }}
