Background
Singer Brian Molko told The Independent that Placebo decided to cover "Life's What You Make It" because it's a 1980s song that the band still enjoys.{{cite web|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/placebo-lifes-what-you-make-it-cover-music-video-agbogbloshie-ghana-e-waste-electronic-waste-dump-a7768826.html |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/archive/20220614/https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/placebo-lifes-what-you-make-it-cover-music-video-agbogbloshie-ghana-e-waste-electronic-waste-dump-a7768826.html |archive-date=14 June 2022 |url-access=subscription |url-status=live|title=Watch the powerful music video for Placebo's poignant 'Life's What You Make It' cover|website=The Independent|first=Christopher|last=Hooton|date=2 June 2017|accessdate=19 September 2017}} In an interview with NME, he stated: "Our last single 'Jesus Son' and the Talk Talk cover 'Life Is What You Make It' are possibly two of the most commercial tracks that we've ever done. What we have a tendency to do it react allergically against what we’ve just done, so it's highly likely that the next thing we do will be something akin to career suicide."{{cite web |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/placebo-discuss-impact-david-bowies-death-progress-career-suicide-new-album-2147487 |title=Placebo Discuss the Impact of David Bowie's Death and Progress on 'Career-Suicide' New Album – NME |last=Trendell |first=Andrew |date=5 October 2017 |website=NME |accessdate=29 September 2019}}
A music video, directed by Sasha Rainbow, was released in June 2017. It was filmed at Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana, the site of one of the world's largest electronic waste dumps.{{cite web|url=https://www.songwritingmagazine.co.uk/music-reviews/lifes-what-you-make-it-by-placebo-single/38006|title='Life's What You Make It' by Placebo (Single)|website=Songwriting|first=David|last=Chrzanowski|date=15 June 2017|accessdate=19 September 2017}}{{cite web|url=http://teamrock.com/news/2017-06-05/placebo-return-with-new-video-and-uk-tour|title=Placebo return with new video and UK tour|website=Teamrock.com|first=Scott|last=Munro|date=5 June 2017|accessdate=19 September 2017}} Despite the film's setting, Molko explained: "The video is not anti-technology. It is about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity that has not been chosen."{{cite web|url=http://www.gigwise.com/news/110026/placebo-autumn-tour-and-video-for-lifes-what-you-make-it-talk-talk|title=Placebo announce autumn tour and share new video|website=Gigwise|first=Julian|last=Marszalek|date=5 June 2017|accessdate=19 September 2017}}
