Shinkolobwe mine, 20 km west of Likasi (then called Jadotville), was described by a 1943 Manhattan Project intelligence report as the most important deposit of uranium yet discovered in the world. The uranium from this mine was used to build the atomic bombs used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.{{cite news |last1=Hogg |first1=Jonny |last2=Ferreira-Marques |first2=Clara |title="Triangle of death" looms over Congo's mining heartlands |url=https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE91I06K/ |access-date=8 February 2024 |work=Reuters |date=19 February 2013}}

In 1961, during the United Nations intervention in the Katanga conflict, a company of Irish UN troops deployed to Jadotville fought valiantly, but was besieged and eventually surrendered to troops loyal to the Katangese Prime Minister Moïse Tshombe.{{cite news |last1=Byrne |first1=Ciaran |title=The True Story of the Heroic Battle That Inspired the New Netflix Film The Siege of Jadotville |url=https://time.com/4408017/the-siege-of-jadotville-the-true-story-netflix-film/ |access-date=8 February 2024 |agency=Time Magazine |date=27 July 2016}}{{cite news |last1=McNalley |first1=Frank |title=Five Irish soldiers took their own lives after Jadotville siege |url=https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/five-irish-soldiers-took-their-own-lives-after-jadotville-siege-1.3893633 |access-date=8 February 2024 |agency=Irish Times |date=15 May 2019}}
