History
=Regional expansion=
With the expansion of regional rival AirAsia into the Indonesian aviation market, the Lion Group established Malindo Air in 2012, to compete with AirAsia in the Malaysian aviation market.{{cite web |last1=Sithraputhran |first1=Siva |title=Lion Air to launch Malaysia-based budget airline |url=https://www.reuters.com/article/lionair-malaysia-idUSL1E8KB17C20120911 |website=Reuters |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=11 September 2012}} The airline's name derived from a combination of the countries Malaysia and Indonesia.
Local competition from national airline Garuda Indonesia also arose in 2012, as Garuda announced intentions to form an off-shoot of its Citilink brand into its own low-cost carrier. Further intentions to expand Citilink were announced, such that it could compete with Lion Air in the domestic low-cost travel market.{{cite web |title=Citilink regional expansion will further intensify competition between Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air |url=https://centreforaviation.com/analysis/reports/citilink-regional-expansion-will-further-intensify-competition-between-garuda-indonesia-and-lion-air-87707 |website=CAPA |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=8 November 2012}} In response, Lion Group announced a full-service competitor to Garuda Indonesia in the form of Batik Air.{{cite web |title=Competition between Indonesian market leaders Lion and Garuda to intensify as Batik Air launches |url=https://centreforaviation.com/analysis/reports/competition-between-indonesian-market-leaders-lion-and-garuda-to-intensify-as-batik-air-launches-106848 |website=CAPA |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=26 April 2013}}{{cite web |last1=Govindasamy |first1=Siva |title=IATA: Lion's Batik Air to up the competition in Southeast Asia |url=https://www.flightglobal.com/iata-lions-batik-air-to-up-the-competition-in-southeast-asia/105640.article |website=FlightGlobal |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=9 June 2012}}
To further expand into the region, Lion Air announced its intention to launch Thai Lion Air, based in Bangkok, Thailand. This would allow the group to further encroach on AirAsia's market share, as well as compete with local low-cost carrier Nok Air.{{cite web |last1=Osman |first1=Nurfika |title=Thai Lion plans large expansion to capture Asian market |url=https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2013/11/02/thai-lion-plans-large-expansion-capture-asian-market.html |website=The Jakarta Post |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=2 November 2013}}{{cite web |title=Lion Air new Thailand affiliate plans late 2013 launch, providing new competition for AirAsia & Nok |url=https://centreforaviation.com/analysis/reports/lion-air-new-thailand-affiliate-plans-late-2013-launch-providing-new-competition-for-airasia--nok-129966 |website=CAPA |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=24 September 2013}}
In 2017, the Lion Air Group managed to surpass 50% market share domestically for the first time.{{cite web |title=Indonesia domestic airline market: rapid growth, rivalry intensifies |url=https://centreforaviation.com/analysis/reports/indonesia-domestic-airline-market-rapid-growth-rivalry-intensifies-410650 |website=CAPA |access-date=19 April 2021 |date=30 April 2018}}
In 2021, after the launch of Super Air Jet, rumors arose that the airline belonged to Lion Air Group after the airline was headed by Ari Azhari, a former General Manager of Services for Lion Air Group. The airline however rejected any claims of formal ties with Lion Air and its subsidiaries.{{Cite news|url=https://travel.kompas.com/read/2022/06/21/060600927/6-fakta-super-air-jet-pemilik-hingga-seragam-ala-milenial?page=all|title=6 Fakta Super Air Jet|work=Kompas.com|date=16 December 2022|access-date=23 March 2023|first=Desi Intan|last=Sari|editor-first=Anggara Wikan|editor-last=Prasetya|language=id}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.cnbcindonesia.com/news/20210504133512-4-243091/lion-bantah-super-air-jet-seberapa-super-maskapai-baru-ini|title=Lion Bantah, Super Air Jet Seberapa Super Maskapai Baru Ini?|work=CNBC Indonesia|date=4 May 2021|access-date=23 March 2023|location=Jakarta|language=id|last=Tirta}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.kompas.tv/article/170951/terbongkar-ini-dia-sosok-di-balik-super-air-jet-maskapai-baru-yang-bidik-konsumen-milenial|title=Terbongkar!
