Tropical Airplay is a chart published by Billboard magazine that ranks the top-performing songs (regardless of genre or language) on tropical radio stations in the United States, based on weekly airplay data compiled by Nielsen's Broadcast Data Systems (BDS).{{cite magazine|last1=Mendizabal|first1=Amaya|title=Fonseca, El Gran Combo Highlight Revamped Tropical Songs Chart|url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/7654972/tropical-songs-chart-fonseca-el-gran-combo-plenealo|magazine=Billboard|publisher=Prometheus Global Media|access-date=January 12, 2017|date=January 12, 2017|url-access=subscription|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181128040330/http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/7654972/tropical-songs-chart-fonseca-el-gran-combo-plenealo|archive-date=November 28, 2018}} It is a subchart of Hot Latin Songs, which lists the best-performing Spanish-language songs in the country.{{cite magazine| date = November 12, 1994| title = Latin Notas| last = Lannert| first = John| magazine = Billboard| publisher = Nielsen Business Media, Inc.| volume = 106| issue = 46| page = 37| url = https://books.google.com/books?id=aAgEAAAAMBAJ&q=billboard&pg=PA36| issn = 0006-2510| access-date = January 15, 2021| archive-date = April 13, 2021| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20210413134044/https://books.google.com/books?id=aAgEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA37&vq=billboard&pg=PA36| url-status = live}} In 1998, 15 songs topped the chart, in 50 issues of the magazine. Due to damage to the BDS monitors in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Georges, the Tropical Airplay chart, along with the other Latin song charts, was not published in the issues dated October 10 and October 17.
At the start of the year, Gisselle was at number one with her first chart-topper "Quiero Estar Contigo".{{cite magazine |title=Gisselle - Chart History |url=https://www.billboard.com/music/gisselle |magazine=Billboard |access-date=June 16, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211010160358/https://www.billboard.com/music/gisselle |archive-date=October 10, 2021 |url-status=dead }} She went on to have another number one in 1998 with a cover version of Lani Hall and Camilo Sestos's "Corazón Encadenado" with Sergio Vargas; it would be the latter artist's only number one. Víctor Manuelle had three number ones in 1998 topping the listing with "Así es la Mujer", "Se Me Rompe el Alma" and "Que Habría Sido de Mí". Following a successful stint with Grupo Manía, Elvis Crespo launched his solo career and released his debut album Suavemente (1998).{{cite web |last1=Harris |first1=Craig |title=Elvis Crespo - Biography, Songs, & Albums |url=https://www.allmusic.com/artist/elvis-crespo-mn0000166033/biography |publisher=AllMusic |access-date=June 13, 2022 |archive-date=November 6, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201106031507/https://www.allmusic.com/artist/elvis-crespo-mn0000166033/biography |url-status=live }} The album spawned two number one singles: the title track and "Tu Sonrisa".
