Pop culture
In Dumb and Dumber, Lloyd refers to Aspen, Colorado as "a place where the beer flows like wine".
Denver has been nicknamed "the Napa valley of beer," but it is unclear how this nickname came to be. Referenced by the Denver Business Journal,{{cite news |url=http://www.bizjournals.com/denver/stories/2010/04/26/story3.html |title=Craft Brewers' Time Has Come |newspaper=Denver Business Journal |author=Sealover, Ed |date=April 25, 2010 |accessdate=January 8, 2013}} it's rumored that the nickname was created by the Sheraton Hotel chain as part of their "Chief Beer Officer" promotion in 2008.{{cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=19061433 |title=Chief Beer Officer Does Best Work Before Lunch |publisher=NPR |author=Kirk Siegler |date=February 20, 2008 |accessdate=January 8, 2013}}
According to legend, Denver's first permanent structure was a saloon.{{cite web |url=http://sporkmarketing.com/colorado-beer-facts.php |title=Beer Facts for Sharing |website=Spork Marketing, LLC |accessdate=January 8, 2013}} While there is evidence of a saloon and brothel at 2009 Market Street{{cite web|url=http://www.denvergov.org/AboutDenver/history_char_silks.asp |title=Denver's Characters |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20060522020335/http://www.denvergov.org/AboutDenver/history_char_silks.asp |archivedate=May 22, 2006 |accessdate=January 8, 2013 }} of historical significance, it seems likely that the true location of the first permanent structure is forever unknown. According to The City and The Saloon, Denver 1858-1916,{{cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=BE3oknDvbCkC&q=2009+market&pg=PP1
|title=The City and the Saloon: Denver, 1858-1916 |isbn=9780870814266 |accessdate=January 8, 2013|last1=Noel |first1=Thomas Jacob |year=1996 |publisher=University Press of Colorado }} there were numerous saloons in the Denver area during the city's early days.
