List of heaviest land mammals
{{Short description|none}}
The heaviest land mammal is the African bush elephant, which has a weight of up to {{cvt|11.1|short ton|t|order=flip}}. It measures 10–13 ft at the shoulder and consumes around {{cvt|500|lb|kg|sigfig=2|order=flip}} of vegetation a day. Its tusks have been known to reach {{cvt|9|ft|m|order=flip|abbr=on}} in length, although in modern populations they are most commonly recorded at a length of {{cvt|0.6|-|0.9|m}}.{{Cite journal |last=Larramendi |first=A. |year=2016 |title=Shoulder height, body mass and shape of proboscideans |journal=Acta Palaeontologica Polonica |volume=61 |issue=3 |pages=537–574 |doi=10.4202/app.00136.2014 |s2cid=2092950 |url=https://www.app.pan.pl/archive/published/app61/app001362014.pdf|doi-access=free }} The average walking speed of an elephant is {{cvt|4.5|mph|km/h|order=flip}}, but they can run at recorded speeds of up to {{cvt|15|mph|km/h|order=flip}}.Stanford News Service [https://news.stanford.edu/pr/03/elephants49.html Stanford News Service] Retrieved April 3, 2016
