British girl group Little Mix have recorded material for six studio albums as well as non-album singles. They came to prominence from the eighth series of The X Factor in 2011.{{cite web|url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/16137567|title=Little Mix become the first band to win the X Factor|work=BBC|date=12 December 2011|access-date=16 January 2016|archive-date=5 November 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181105221553/https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/16137567|url-status=live}} Members Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson, all aged 18–20, originally entered the show as soloists, but were placed together to make a quartet at the end of the bootcamp stage.{{cite web|url=http://www.mtv.com/news/1704062/little-mix-dna-wings/|title=Little Mix Call Their Formation 'A Freak Accident'|work=MTV|date=20 March 2013|access-date=16 January 2016|archive-date=31 March 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160331022043/http://www.mtv.com/news/1704062/little-mix-dna-wings/|url-status=dead}} A cover of "Cannonball" by Damien Rice was released as their debut single.{{cite web|last=Plunkett|first=John|url=https://www.theguardian.com/media/2011/dec/19/x-factor-little-mix-cannonball|title=X Factor: Little Mix have lowest-selling winner's single since 2004|work=The Guardian|date=19 December 2011|access-date=16 January 2016|archive-date=10 May 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170510185438/https://www.theguardian.com/media/2011/dec/19/x-factor-little-mix-cannonball|url-status=live}}
After taking part on the show, the band worked on their debut album, DNA, which was released on 19 November 2012. Its track "Wings" is a bubblegum pop and R&B song with elements of 1990s music.{{cite news|last=Jack|first=Malcolm|date=3 February 2013|title=Little Mix – review|url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/feb/03/little-mix-review|newspaper=The Guardian|access-date=14 February 2016|archive-date=8 February 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160208062222/http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/feb/03/little-mix-review|url-status=live}} Lyrically, it is about self-empowerment and following one's dreams.{{cite news|last=McKarus |first=Lauren |url=http://www.seventeen.com/_mobile/entertainment/reviews/little-mix-single-wings |title=Listen To Little Mix Single Wings |work=Seventeen |date=5 February 2013 |access-date=27 March 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160223164447/http://www.seventeen.com/_mobile/entertainment/reviews/little-mix-single-wings |archive-date=23 February 2016 |url-status=dead }} The title track has a Gothic feel to it whereby Little Mix display a darker side to their personalities.{{cite web|last=Corner|first=Lewis|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/music/album-reviews/review/a438500/little-mix-dna-album-review/|title=Little Mix: 'DNA' – Album review|work=Digital Spy|date=19 November 2012|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=24 June 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180624010459/http://www.digitalspy.com/music/album-reviews/review/a438500/little-mix-dna-album-review/|url-status=live}} The group worked with former Girls Aloud member, Nicola Roberts, on the Latin-inspired "Going Nowhere" and featured Missy Elliott on the single release version of pop-funk track "How Ya Doin'?".{{cite web|url=http://www.capitalfm.com/artists/little-mix/videos/how-ya-doin/#fmkP0ptBpqTg4jCL.97|title=Little Mix Feat. Little Mix's second studio album, Salute, was released on 8 November 2013. The group previously stated in March that the project would be more influenced by R&B than their previous album.{{cite web|last=Corner|first=Lewis|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a465712/little-mix-talk-next-album-it-will-be-more-rb/|title=Exclusive: Little Mix talk next album: 'It will be more R&B'|work=Digital Spy|date=8 March 2013|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=3 February 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160203004458/http://www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a465712/little-mix-talk-next-album-it-will-be-more-rb/|url-status=live}} "Move" was released as the lead single, and described by Digital Spy writer Lewis Corner as setting up their new urban creative direction "nicely."{{cite web|last=Corner|first=Lewis|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/music/album-reviews/review/a529598/little-mix-salute-album-review-a-razor-sharp-record-that-makes-a-mark/|title=Little Mix Salute album review: A razor-sharp record that makes a mark|work=Digital Spy|date=8 November 2013|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=4 February 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160204103643/http://www.digitalspy.com/music/album-reviews/review/a529598/little-mix-salute-album-review-a-razor-sharp-record-that-makes-a-mark/|url-status=live}} The title track makes use of a Blitzkrieg siren in its composition while lyrically it promotes female self-empowerment. "Nothing Feels Like You" adopts a Carnival feel while "Good Enough" is a piano ballad which deals with the process of being rejected by someone you have feelings for. The Guardian critic Harriet Gibsone described "Boy" as a revamped interpretation of N*SYNC's 2001 track "Gone".{{cite news|last=Gibsone|first=Harriet|url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/nov/07/little-mix-salute-review|title=Little Mix: Salute – review|work=The Guardian|date=7 November 2013|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=9 November 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131109040905/http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/nov/07/little-mix-salute-review|url-status=live}} In March 2014, the group released a cover of Cameo's 1986 single "Word Up!" as the official Sport Relief charity single.{{cite web|last=Runcie|first=Charlotte|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/music-news/10578772/Little-Mix-to-cover-Word-Up-as-Sport-Relief-single.html|title=Little Mix to cover Word Up as Sport Relief single|work=The Daily Telegraph|date=17 January 2014|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=20 January 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140120204332/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/music-news/10578772/Little-Mix-to-cover-Word-Up-as-Sport-Relief-single.html|url-status=live}}
Get Weird, their third album, was released on 6 November 2015. With the exception of the "moody" trap track "Lightning", it saw the group return to a pop music style, though it was noted for its sexualised tone.{{cite web|last=Corner|first=Lewis|url=http://www.digitalspy.com/music/album-reviews/review/a677147/little-mix-get-weird-album-review/|title=Little Mix Get Weird album review: More sparkle, style and sex|work=Digital Spy|date=4 November 2015|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=2 February 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160202231408/http://www.digitalspy.com/music/album-reviews/review/a677147/little-mix-get-weird-album-review/|url-status=live}}{{cite web|last=Levine|first=Nick|url=https://www.nme.com/reviews/little-mix/16318|title=Little Mix – 'Get Weird'|work=NME|date=3 November 2015|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=11 December 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151211001159/http://www.nme.com/reviews/little-mix/16318|url-status=live}} The song "A.D.I.D.A.S." is an acronym for "All Day I Dream About Sex" and alludes to the sexual act of cunnilingus and fellatio in its lyrics. It also samples the line "hot love and emotion" from "Hold On, We're Going Home" performed by Drake; he, along with the song's other composers Noah "40" Shebib, Majid Al Maskati, Jordan Ullman and Anthony Jeffries, received songwriting credits as a result. "Love Me Like You" is a retro-Motown track reminiscent of Shadow Morton's work.{{cite news|last=Gill|first=Andy|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/little-mix-get-weird-album-review-a6724026.html|title=Little Mix, Get Weird – album review|work=The Independent|date=6 November 2015|access-date=17 January 2016|archive-date=5 March 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305235731/http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/little-mix-get-weird-album-review-a6724026.html|url-status=live}} NME writer Nick Levine noted that the lyrics "He was just a dick and I knew it" on "Hair" and "Your voice dropped and you thought you could handle me" on "Grown" were two examples of many "sassy" tracks on Get Weird.
