On February 3, 2021, the House Republican Conference held a closed-door, secret-ballot vote on whether to remove her from her position in the Republican House leadership. She held her position by a 145–61 vote, with one member voting present. After the vote, Cheney said, "we're not going to be divided and that we're not going to be in a situation where people can pick off any member of leadership".{{cite news|url=https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/03/politics/liz-cheney-house-republican-meeting/|title=House Republicans vote to keep Liz Cheney in leadership after impeachment vote|first1=Manu|last1=Raju|first2=Jeff|last2=Zeleny|first3=Clare|last3=Foran|website=CNN|access-date=February 4, 2021|archive-date=February 4, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210204014023/https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/03/politics/liz-cheney-house-republican-meeting/|url-status=live}}{{cite news|first1=Kristina|last1=Peterson|first2=Siobhan|last2=Hughes|date=February 4, 2021|title=Liz Cheney Retains GOP Post, Marjorie Taylor Greene's Committee Seats Under Threat|language=en-US|work=The Wall Street Journal|url=https://www.wsj.com/articles/republicans-weigh-political-fates-of-marjorie-taylor-greene-liz-cheney-11612374731|access-date=February 4, 2021|issn=0099-9660|url-access=subscription|archive-date=March 1, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210301121537/https://www.wsj.com/articles/republicans-weigh-political-fates-of-marjorie-taylor-greene-liz-cheney-11612374731|url-status=live}} On February 6, the Wyoming Republican Party censured Cheney for her vote to impeach Trump.{{cite web|last=Leonard|first=Ben|title=Wyoming GOP censures Liz Cheney for vote to impeach Trump|url=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/06/wyoming-gop-censure-liz-cheney-466561|access-date=February 7, 2021|website=Politico|date=February 6, 2021 |language=en|archive-date=February 22, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210222032200/https://www.politico.com/news/2021/02/06/wyoming-gop-censure-liz-cheney-466561|url-status=live}} Cheney responded, "My vote to impeach was compelled by the oath I swore to the Constitution. Today we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president, who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol in an effort to steal the election, has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him. He risks inciting further violence. Millions of Americans have been misled by the former president. They have heard only his words, but not the truth, as he continues to undermine our democratic process, sowing seeds of doubt about whether democracy really works at all. I am a conservative Republican and the most conservative of conservative principles is reverence for the rule of law. The Electoral College has voted. More than sixty state and federal courts, including multiple judges he appointed, have rejected the former president's claims. The Department of Justice in his administration investigated the former president's claims of widespread fraud and found no evidence to support them. The election is over. That is the rule of law. That is our constitutional process. Those who refuse to accept the rulings of our courts are at war with the Constitution.{{cite news|url=https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/11/politics/cheney-house-floor-remarks/|title=Liz Cheney strikes defiant tone in floor speech on eve of her expected ousting from House GOP leadership|first1=Jeremy|last1=Herb|first2=Annie|last2=Grayer|work=CNN|date=May 12, 2021|access-date=May 19, 2022|archive-date=May 19, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220519231952/https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/11/politics/cheney-house-floor-remarks/|url-status=live}}{{cite news|url=https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/11/politics/liz-cheney-floor-speech-full-remarks/|title=Liz Cheney's remarks on the House floor on the night before her expected removal from leadership post|date=May 12, 2021|work=CNN|access-date=May 12, 2021|archive-date=May 12, 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210512145311/https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/11/politics/liz-cheney-floor-speech-full-remarks/|url-status=live}}
