The Lumière Awards ({{langx|fr|Prix Lumières}}), officially the Lumières de la presse internationale, are French film awards presented by the {{lang|fr|Académie des Lumières}} to honor the best in the French-speaking cinema of the previous year. The awards ceremony is organized by the Académie des Lumières which consists of over 200 representatives of the international press based in Paris. Today they are regarded as one of the most prestigious French film industry awards, and are considered France's equivalent to the Golden Globe Awards.{{Cite news |date=23 December 2013 |title=Les nominations aux Lumières, Golden Globes à la française |url=https://www.lemonde.fr/cinema/article/2013/12/23/les-nominations-aux-lumieres-golden-globes-a-la-francaise_5998768_3476.html |access-date=16 December 2024 |work=Le Monde |language=fr}}

History

The Lumière Awards were initiated in 1995 by French producer Daniel Toscan du Plantier and American journalist and ex-Newsweek's Paris correspondent Edward Behr. Their idea was to replicate the Golden Globes, which were presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.[http://www.academielumieres.com/l__academie_des_lumieres_du_cinema.ws L'Académie des Lumières] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131017225322/http://www.academielumieres.com/l__academie_des_lumieres_du_cinema.ws |date=17 October 2013 }} "À l'image des Golden Globe Awards décernés chaque année par l'Association de la presse étrangère de Hollywood, l'Académie des Lumières veut souligner le grand intérêt que porte au cinéma français la presse internationale largement représentée à Paris." The Lumière Awards is usually presented a month before the César Awards, the French national film award.{{cite web|title=Présentation|url=http://www.academielumieres.com/l__academie_des_lumieres_du_cinema.ws|website=l'Académie des Lumières|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131017225322/http://www.academielumieres.com/l__academie_des_lumieres_du_cinema.ws|archive-date=17 October 2013|access-date=17 December 2013|publication-date=}}{{Citation needed|date=August 2022}} Le Figaro described the Lumières as "one of the barometers of the French awards season and are a good indication of the films that will be acclaimed by the César Awards, when they are nominated in January".{{Cite web |last=Jamet |first=Constance |date=14 December 2023 |title=Anatomie d'une chute fait aussi le plein de nominations aux prix Lumières |url=https://www.lefigaro.fr/cinema/anatomie-d-une-chute-fait-aussi-le-plein-de-nominations-aux-prix-lumiere-20231214 |access-date=16 December 2024 |website=Le Figaro |language=fr}}
