The Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database (LEDA) was a database of galaxies, created in 1983 at the Lyon Observatory. Each galaxy had a number assigned to it, which is now known as its PGC number.{{cite web|url=http://leda.univ-lyon1.fr/leda/param/pgc.html|title=HYPERLEDA Help: Internal number: pgc|work=HyperLeda|accessdate=19 January 2017}} The Principal Galaxies Catalogue (PGC), published in 1989, was based on the Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database and contained cross-identifications for it.{{cite journal|title=VizieR Online Data Catalog: Catalogue of Principal Galaxies (PGC)|author1=Paturel, G.|author2=Fouque, P.|author3=Bottinelli, L.|author4=Gouguenheim, L.|bibcode=1995yCat.7119....0P|date=1989|journal=VizieR On-line Data Catalog}} LEDA was eventually merged with Hypercat to become HyperLEDA in 2000, itself also known as PGC2003.{{cite journal|title=HYPERLEDA. I. Identification and designation of galaxies|date=2003|author1=Paturel, G.|display-authors=etal|journal=Astronomy and Astrophysics|volume=412|pages= 45–55|bibcode=2003A&A...412...45P|doi=10.1051/0004-6361:20031411|doi-access=free}} LEDA originally contained information on more than 60 parameters for about 100,000 galaxies, and now contains information on over 3 million celestial objects, of which about 1.5 million are galaxies. The database allows astronomers around the world access to its information.
