In 2021, Padun won Stages 7 and 8 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, after spending each day in the breakaway, while also collecting enough points to win the mountains classification.{{cite web |title=Richie Porte seals Critérium du Dauphiné title as Mark Padun wins second stage in a row |url=https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/richie-porte-seals-criterium-du-dauphine-title-as-mark-padun-wins-second-stage-in-a-row |website=cyclingweekly.com |access-date=9 June 2021 |date=6 June 2021}} By dropping his companions in the breakaway and holding off the group of favorites on two consecutive days, these wins sparked sceptic commentary from riders and staff of other teams.{{Cite web |last=Benson|first=Daniel|date=7 June 2021 |title=Erzen defends Bahrain Victorious in face of anonymous doping suspicions |url=https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/erzen-defends-bahrain-victorious-in-face-of-anonymous-doping-suspicions/ |access-date=14 March 2022 |website=cyclingnews.com |language=en}} The French newspaper Le Parisien published quotes calling his performance "an absolute disgrace" and that it "reminds us of the dirty 2000s".{{Cite web |last=Bérard|first=Christophe|date=6 June 2021 |title=L'Ukrainien Mark Padun, double vainqueur d'étape en montagne, crée un malaise sur le Dauphiné|trans-title=Ukrainian Mark Padun, double mountain stage winner, creates discomfort in the Dauphiné|url=https://www.leparisien.fr/sports/cyclisme/lukrainien-mark-padun-double-vainqueur-detape-en-montagne-cree-un-malaise-sur-le-dauphine-06-06-2021-Q7T3TGW6A5B25GND2OBPGDOMUM.php |access-date=14 March 2022 |website=leparisien.fr |language=fr-FR}} Despite his strong performance, he was not nominated for the Tour de France by his team, nor was he taken to the Men's individual road race at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics by his federation, to the surprise of observers.
