Boxing career

As an amateur he was runner-up for the 1966 Amateur Boxing Association of England Light middleweight (71 kg) title, against Thomas "Tom" Imrie[http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=80959&cat=boxer] (Bucchleuch BC),{{cite web|url=http://www.abae.co.uk/aba/index.cfm/boxers/roll-of-honour/elite-abae-championship/1980-19891/1966/|title=1966 79th ABAE National Championship|publisher=abae.co.uk|date=31 December 2012|accessdate=1 January 2013|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://archive.today/20131113141229/http://www.abae.co.uk/aba/index.cfm/boxers/roll-of-honour/elite-abae-championship/1980-19891/1966/|archivedate=13 November 2013}} boxing out of Fitzroy Lodge ABC.
