Percy has created interactive films for institutions such as the Tate Gallery, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the British Film Institute, the National Theatre, University of the Arts London, BT and Innovate UK. He has collaborated with notable talent including Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Derek Jacobi, and Daisy Ridley (see below). Percy is also a TEDx speaker, talking about his film Lifesaver and 'how to save lives with interactive film'.{{cite web |title=Lifesaver -- how to save lives with interactive film {{!}} Martin Percy {{!}} TEDxTUHHSalon |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OI-kgj_jkA |website=TEDx YouTube channel |access-date=25 May 2024 |date=5 August 2014}}

Percy graduated from King's College, Cambridge, and is the son of the late illustrator Graham Percy.

Use of AI in Interactive Film

Percy has integrated AI-driven interaction into much of his recent work, adapting films based on input from device cameras, accelerometers, and buttons. Some works also feature AI-generated video. Notable examples include:

  • The Adaptive-Media Interview Coach{{cite web |title=Interview Coach |url=https://a-dapt.com/interview-coach/ |website=A-Dapt - Adaptive-Media® Marketing and Soft Skills Tutorial Format |access-date=29 May 2024 |date=9 March 2023}} (2022, UK) – Webby Award Winner,{{cite web |title=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |url=https://winners.webbyawards.com/2022/ai-metaverse-virtual/general-virtual-experiences/science-education/220082/the-adaptive-media-interview-coach |website=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |access-date=29 May 2024 |language=en}} created by A-Dapt for Nacro, a social justice charity. Interactive Crisis Simulator Films

One distinctive form of interactive film made by Percy simulates emergency situations. These require users to make good decisions fast - and thus learn by doing. Notable examples include:

Participatory documentaries for collective interaction

Another distinctive form of interactive film made by Percy are documentaries which use interactivity and audience discussion to make the views of the audience an integral part of the film experience. Notable examples include:

Virtual Reality Films

Percy has created virtual reality (VR) films that use immersive technology and interactive storytelling to engage users in educational and mindfulness experiences. Notable examples include:

  • Lifesaver VR {{cite web |title=Lifesaver VR - Trailer |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vVEwC03agQ |access-date=7 December 2024 |date=18 July 2019}} (2016, UK) – A Webby Honoree{{cite web |title=Lifesaver VR {{!}} Resuscitation Council UK |url=https://www.resus.org.uk/public-resource/how-we-save-lives/lifesaver-learning/lifesaver-vr |website=www.resus.org.uk |access-date=7 December 2024}} and BAFTA nominee{{cite web |title=2017 Children's Learning {{!}} BAFTA Awards |url=https://awards.bafta.org/award/2017/childrens/learning |website=BAFTA Awards |access-date=7 December 2024}} teaching CPR through a simulated emergency. Other types of Interactive Film

Percy has developed several other distinct types or formats of interactive film. Notable examples include:

= Interactive Interviews and Talks =

In the 2000s, Percy created a number of interactive talks for the British Film Institute (BFI) and the Royal National Theatre, sponsored by BT. In these talks, celebrated individuals would ask the user questions and then respond to their response. These were built using Adobe Flash and so are no longer viewable. However links to screengrab recordings are given where available. Notable examples include:

  • National Theatre: A Conversation with Sir Ian McKellen {{cite web |title=A Conversation with Sir Ian McKellen | website=YouTube |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGS2NU3CEfo |access-date=3 June 2024 |date=21 July 2019}} (2007, UK) – BAFTA nominee.{{cite web |title=2007 Television Craft Interactive Innovation {{!}} BAFTA Awards |url=https://awards.bafta.org/award/2007/tvcraft/interactive-innovation |website=awards.bafta.org |access-date=2 June 2024}} Emmy nominee,{{cite web |last1=Schneider |first1=Michael |title=Emmy pushes Web envelope |url=https://variety.com/2007/digital/awards/emmy-pushes-web-envelope-1117968337/#noms |website=Variety |access-date=3 June 2024 |date=11 July 2007}} 3x Webby nominee.{{cite web |title=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |url=https://winners.webbyawards.com/2008/video/general-video/documentary-individual-episode/153588/a-conversation-with-sir-ian |website=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |access-date=2 June 2024 |language=en}}{{cite web |title=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |url=https://winners.webbyawards.com/2008/websites-and-mobile-sites/general-desktop-mobile-sites/broadband/153586/a-conversation-with-sir-ian |website=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |language=en}}{{cite web |title=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |url=https://winners.webbyawards.com/2009/video/performance-craft/best-use-of-interactive-video/151852/a-conversation-with-sir-ian-mckellen |website=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |access-date=2 June 2024 |language=en}}

= Interactive Art Explorers =

In the 2000s, Percy created interactive films for Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives, and Tate Online, many in collaboration with Will Gompertz and Tate Media, and all sponsored by BT. These used dozens or hundreds of video loops to allow users to explore artworks or locations depicted with film rather than with stills. To this he added interviews, music tracks, and stories as appropriate. He later used the same approach for the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco). Notable examples include:

  • Asian Art Museum (San Francisco): The Bali Temple Explorer {{cite web |title=The Bali Temple Explorer - Intro | website=YouTube |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TCsy6VWRww&t=5s |access-date=4 June 2024 |date=14 May 2012}}{{cite web |title=Bali Temple Explorer - Linear Video Version | website=YouTube |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9taCmTB06U |access-date=4 June 2024 |date=25 February 2011}} (2011, USA) – Webby Award Winner.{{cite web |title=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |url=https://winners.webbyawards.com/2011/video/general-video/travel-lifestyle/150821/the-bali-temple-explorer |website=NEW Webby Gallery + Index |access-date=4 April 2024 |language=en}}
