The Matariki Network of Universities (MNU) is an international group of universities that focuses on strong links between research and undergraduate teaching.{{cite web|url=http://www.dur.ac.uk/dialogue/may10/spotlight/io/|title=The International Office|publisher=Durham University|accessdate=28 June 2010|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20121015043502/http://www.dur.ac.uk/dialogue/may10/spotlight/io/|archivedate=15 October 2012}} Each member is leading international best practice in research and education based on long academic traditions.{{cite web|url=http://www.dur.ac.uk/committees/Executive-Committee/2010-03-30m.pdf|date=23 March 2010|title=Minutes of the University Executive Committee|publisher=Durham University|accessdate=28 June 2010}}{{dead link|date=January 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }} The MNU was established in 2010 to enable universities to enhance diversity, to share ideas and expertise, and to learn international best practice from each other, recognising the shared commitment to an ethos of excellence in research, scholarship and rounded education.{{cite web|url=http://www.matarikinetwork.com/|title=Welcome to the Matariki Network of Universities (MNU)|publisher=MNU|accessdate=28 June 2010}}

Name and activities

Matariki is the name in the Māori language for the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters. It reflects the seven founding member universities of the MNU.{{cite web|url=http://www.matarikinetwork.com/name.html|title=The Name|publisher=The Matariki Network of Universities|accessdate=28 June 2010}}{{cite web|url=http://www.queensu.ca/news/articles/queen-s-joins-new-international-network|date=17 May 2010|title=Queen's joins new international network|publisher=Queen's University|accessdate=28 June 2010|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100526022122/http://www.queensu.ca/news/articles/queen-s-joins-new-international-network#|archive-date=26 May 2010|url-status=dead}}

The Matariki Undergraduate Research Network (MURN) ran in 2012 and 2013 as an attempt to foster international undergraduate research. Assessment of MURN found that it had worked well locally but the international element had been less effective, in particular due to differences in time zones and in academic calendars.{{cite journal|journal= Scholarship and Practice of Undergraduate Research|author1=Spronken-Smith, R.|author2= Sandover, S.|author3= Partridge, L.|author4= Leger, A.|author5= Fawcett, T.|author6= Burd, L.|year=2018|title= The Challenges of Going Global with Undergraduate Research: The Matariki Undergraduate Research Network.|volume= 2|issue=2|pages= 64-72|doi=10.18833/spur/2/2/8}}

The academic libraries of the member institutions have collaborated on benchmarking activities to set their performance in an international context and to develop and share best practices.{{cite journal|author1=Hart, S. |author2= Amos, H. |year=2014|title=The development of performance measures through an activity based benchmarking project across an international network of academic libraries|journal=Performance Measurement and Metrics| volume= 15 |issue= 1/2 |pages= 58-66 |doi=10.1108/PMM-03-2014-0010}}{{cite book|title=Conversations with Leading Academic and Research Library Directors: International Perspectives on Library Management|publisher=Chandos Publishing|pages=274–276|year=2018|author1=Patrick Lo|author2= Dickson Chiu|author3= Allan Cho|author4= Brad Allard}} The libraries also collaborated on assessing whether 'flipped subscription' models for open access publishing, where funds previously used for journal subscriptions are flipped to instead pay article publishing costs, were viable for mid-sized research universities.{{cite journal|author1=Hart, S.|author2= Nicholls, S.|author3= Amos, H.|author4= Benn, J. |year=2019|title=Making sense of flipping data|journal= Performance Measurement and Metrics|volume= 20 |issue= 3|pages= 159-167|doi=10.1108/PMM-08-2019-0030}}

The "Oceans and the Blue Economy" theme brought together researchers from the Matariki universities to identify ways in which the marine economy could achieve economic goals while also building environmental resilience.{{cite book|title=Marine Extremes: Ocean Safety, Marine Health and the Blue Economy|chapter=1. Universities

The network was set up by seven universities in 2010.{{cite web|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100528172814/http://www.matarikinetwork.com/members.html|archive-date=28 May 2010|title=Members of the Matariki Network of Universities|accessdate=28 June 2010|publisher=The Matariki Network of Universities|url=http://www.matarikinetwork.com/members.html}} These were joined by an eighth university, University of the Western Cape in South Africa, in 2024.{{cite web|url=https://www.matarikinetwork.org/2024/09/04/the-matariki-network-of-universities-welcomes-its-8th-member/|title= The Matariki Network of Universities welcomes its 8th member |author=Megan Olshefski|date=4 September 2024|website=Matariki Network of Universities|access-date=11 September 2024}}
