Bialik founded Grok Nation (originally styled "GrokNation") in August 2015 to facilitate conversations among people of different ages and backgrounds about issues. It aimed to engage readers in online conversations that lead to offline action, mobilizing them to change the world as a community. To grok means to understand in a profound manner. (The term comes from the 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein.) Bialik had written on a similar idea for Jewish Telegraphic Agency–affiliated Jewish parenting site Kveller for five years. Bialik's article drew backlash from critics who said she was insinuating that modesty and a conservative wardrobe can guard one against sexual assault. Patricia Arquette tweeted, "I have to say I was dressed non-provocatively at 12 walking home from school when men masturbated at me. It's not the clothes."{{cite news |last1=Sheth |first1=Sonam |title='The Big Bang Theory' star's op-ed about Harvey Weinstein sparks outrage on Twitter |url=http://www.businessinsider.com/reactions-mayim-bialik-harvey-weinstein-oped-new-york-times-2017-10 |access-date=October 17, 2017 |work=Business Insider |date=October 14, 2017 |archive-date=October 17, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171017031959/http://www.businessinsider.com/reactions-mayim-bialik-harvey-weinstein-oped-new-york-times-2017-10 |url-status=live}} In response, Bialik said she regretted that the piece "became what it became" and participated in a Facebook Live event hosted by The New York Times to answer questions about it.{{cite news |last1=The Associated Press |title=Mayim Bialik Discusses Weinstein Comments After Backlash |url=https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2017/10/16/us/ap-us-people-mayim-bialik.html |access-date=October 17, 2017 |work=The New York Times |date=October 16, 2017 |archive-date=October 17, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171017095919/https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2017/10/16/us/ap-us-people-mayim-bialik.html |url-status=live}}{{cite news |last1=Wanshel |first1=Elyse |title=Mayim Bialik Is 'Very Sorry' For Her Controversial Weinstein Op-Ed |url=https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mayim-bialik-harvey-weinstein_n_59e8d3a9e4b0aa3f77dc5763 |work=HuffPost |date=October 19, 2017 |access-date=April 27, 2021 |archive-date=April 27, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210427120259/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mayim-bialik-harvey-weinstein_n_59e8d3a9e4b0aa3f77dc5763 |url-status=live}}{{cite news |last1=Kabir |first1=Kareeda |title=What Mayim Bialik Gets Wrong About 'Harvey Weinstein's World' |url=https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-problem-with-mayim-bialiks-op-ed_b_59e42c2be4b09e31db975a7e |work=HuffPost |date=October 16, 2017 |access-date=April 27, 2021 |archive-date=April 27, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210427120258/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-problem-with-mayim-bialiks-op-ed_b_59e42c2be4b09e31db975a7e |url-status=live}}{{cite news |last1=Elahe |first1=Izadi |title=Mayim Bialik fires back at Weinstein op-ed critics: 'It's so sad how vicious people are being' |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/harvey-weinstein-latest-mayim-bialik-criticism-response-new-york-times-sexual-harassment-sexism-hollywood-feminism-a8002266.html |work=The Independent |date=October 16, 2017 |access-date=April 27, 2021 |archive-date=April 27, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210427120300/https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/harvey-weinstein-latest-mayim-bialik-criticism-response-new-york-times-sexual-harassment-sexism-hollywood-feminism-a8002266.html |url-status=live}}
