He opposed Khomeini's theory of velayat-e faqih as justification for rule of the Islamic state by Islamic jurists,[https://books.google.com/books?id=elHww0W0ZO4C&pg=PA41&dq=mehdi+haeri+yazdi&ei=LiezR-npCJeQiQHhgtHNDQ&sig=CuVULoBa03Ecz6HLXb_Uhh1uzK8 Distant Relations: Iran and Lebanon in the Last 500 Years By H. Haeri-Yazdi published his objection to the velayat-e faqih in his 1994 book Hekmat va Hokumat. The book was published in London, but nevertheless has been widely distributed in Iran.For a discussion, see Farzin Vahdat “Mehdi Haeri Yazdi and the Discourse of Modernity” in Ramin Jahanbeglu (ed.), Iran, Lexington Books, 2004.

In 1992 he published The Principles of Epistemology in Islamic Philosophy : Knowledge by Presence. The book aimed to present Western scholars and philosophers a theme that he considered most important : knowledge by presence - knowledge that arises from immediate and intuitive awareness.{{Cite book |title= The Principles of Epistemology in Islamic Philosophy: Knowledge by Presence |last= Mehdi |first= Ha'iri Yazdi |authorlink= Mehdi Haeri Yazdi |year= 1992 |publisher= State University of New York Press |isbn= 978-0-791-40948-0 |pages= 254 }}

With his knowledge of Islamic philosophy and other Islamic fields, as well as his formal training in contemporary Western philosophical traditions, Mehdi Haeri Yazdi sought to study the core concerns of modernity and Islam. Farzin Vahdat discusses Yazdi's ideas in his book Islamic Ethos and the Specter of Modernity (2015).{{cite web|url= https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/islamic-ethos-and-the-specter-of-modernity/mehdi-haeri-yazdi-and-the-discourse-of-modernity/1FB191C2B3359B4D8045BD6D6058D7FC | title= Chapter Five - Mehdi Haeri Yazdi and the Discourse of Modernity | publisher = Cambridge University Press }}{{cite web|url= https://anthempress.com/islamic-ethos-and-the-specter-of-modernity-pdf | title= Islamic Ethos and the Specter of Modernity By Farzin Vahdat | publisher = Anthem Press }}
