Mel Rosenberg (born Melvin Rosenberg, 12 November 1951 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) is a Israeli-Canadian microbiologist best known for his research on the diagnosis and treatment of bad breath (halitosis).[http://www.tau.ac.il/~melros/author.html Bad Breath Research – Tel-Aviv University], Mel Rosenberg's researcher site at Tel-Aviv University.{{cite journal|doi=10.1111/j.1574-6968.2006.00291.x | pmid=16923066 | volume=262 | issue=2 | title=Microbial adhesion to hydrocarbons: twenty-five years of doing MATH | year=2006 | journal=FEMS Microbiology Letters | pages=129–134 | last1 = Rosenberg | first1 = Mel| doi-access=free }}
Early life and education
Mel Rosenberg (Hebrew: מל רוזנברג) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1951. He grew up in Ottawa and immigrated to Israel in 1969. He received his Bachelor of Science from Hebrew University (1973) and went on to pursue both his Masters of Science (1975) and Ph.D. (1982) at Tel Aviv University.
Academic professional
Rosenberg performed his Ph.D. research in the field of petroleum microbiology, under the supervision of Eugene Rosenberg and David Gutnick. His first publication as a graduate student, on the adhesion of microorganisms to oil droplets (1980),{{cite journal | doi = 10.1111/j.1574-6968.1980.tb05599.x | title = Adherence of bacteria to hydrocarbons: A simple method for measuring cell-surface hydrophobicity | year = 1980 | last1 = Rosenberg | first1 = M. | last2 = Gutnick | first2 = D. | last3 = Rosenberg | first3 = E. | journal = FEMS Microbiology Letters | volume = 9 | pages = 29–33 | doi-access = }} became the most highly cited publication of FEMS Microbiology Journal and a "Citation Classic" by the Science Citation Index of 1991.The citation classic of 1991 http://www.garfield.library.upenn.edu/classics1991/A1991FE76400001.pdf
After receiving his doctorate in microbiology, Rosenberg held various faculty academic positions at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine at Tel Aviv University, and has received honorary appointments at the University of Rochester, University of Pennsylvania, University College London (Eastman Dental Hospital) and University of Toronto.
Rosenberg's interest in the diagnosis and treatment of bad breath (halitosis) began in the mid-1980s.[http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1752-7155/7/2/020201/pdf;jsessionid=781F748114261C5FB0B05B794FE702A0.ip-10-40-2-81 Journal of Breath Research editorial], greeting its outgoing editor-in-chief, Mel Rosenberg.
