Michael V. Smith, openly gay,{{citation |title=Vancouver's Smith wins new prize for gay writers |date=June 14, 2007 |publisher=CBC News}} is a graduate of the University of British Columbia's Creative Writing program. He has also made a number of short films, several of which have garnered awards from the Inside Out Film and Video Festival in Toronto, Ontario. He teaches at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus in the interdisciplinary Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.
He served on the jury of the 2012 Dayne Ogilvie Prize, selecting Amber Dawn as that year's winner.
