Work
In 2013 Hebron launched Gallery Tally, a collaborative art project in which people around the world were tracking women's representation in art galleries and creating posters for exhibition.{{Cite news |last=Miranda |first=Carolina A. |title=18%: Artist Micol Hebron tallies the presence of women on Artforum covers |url=http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/miranda/la-et-cam-artist-micol-hebron-gender-artforum-covers-20150410-column.html |newspaper=Los Angeles Times |access-date=10 April 2015}}{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=jRIvDAAAQBAJ|title=The SAGE Handbook of Cultural Sociology|last1=Almila|first1=Anna-Mari|last2=Inglis|first2=David|publisher=SAGE|year=2016|isbn=9781473958685|location=Los Angeles, California|pages=335|via=Google Books}} In 2014, the (en)Gendered (in)Equity: The Gallery Tally Poster Project discovered that in Los Angeles and New York galleries, roughly 70% of gallery representation was of male artists.
In order to protest the Instagram social network's nipple policy and social media sexism, in 2014 Hebron created an "Acceptable Male Nipple Template".{{Cite web|url=https://milk.xyz/articles/4115-Exclusive-Male-Nipple-Template-Takes-On-Social-Media-Sexism/|title=Exclusive: 'Male Nipple Template' Takes On Social Media Sexism|last=|first=|date=2015-07-15|website=Milk|language=en-US|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190605052544/https://milk.xyz/articles/4115-Exclusive-Male-Nipple-Template-Takes-On-Social-Media-Sexism/|url-status=usurped|archive-date=June 5, 2019|access-date=2019-06-05}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.menshealth.com/sex-women/a19545146/nipple-double-standard/|title=Why Are Women's Nipples Banned in Public and on Instagram, but Men's Nipples Aren't?|last=Bonaguro|first=Alison|date=2015-07-10|website=Men's Health|language=en-US|access-date=2019-06-05}} The template consisted of the visual image of a male nipple that could be photoshopped on to an image of a woman's breast or elsewhere, reminiscent of a pastie.{{Cite web|url=https://mashable.com/2015/07/06/instagram-nipple-photoshops/|title=Women are Photoshopping male nipples to protest Instagram's policy|last=Robertson|first=Lindsey|date=2015-07-06|website=Mashable|language=en|access-date=2019-06-05}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.elle.com.au/news/today-were-all-thinking-about-male-nipples-5997|title=Micol Hebron's male nipple template has gone viral for a good reason|last=Stevens|first=Annie|date=|website=ELLE|language=en|access-date=2019-06-05|quote=The template resurfaced and went viral this week after musicians La Sera (Katy Goodman) and Our Lady J posted it onto their Facebook walls.}} As a result of her nipple project, the template went viral and Hebron has been suspended from Facebook multiple times.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=-RteDwAAQBAJ|title=Custodians of the Internet: Platforms, Content Moderation, and the Hidden Decisions that Shape Social Media|last=Gillespie|first=Tarleton|publisher=Yale University Press|year=2018|isbn=9780300173130|location=|pages=167–168|via=Google Books}}
In October 2019, Instagram held a closed meeting to discuss censorship, art, and nudity on their software platform, a few artists joined the meeting including Micol Hebron, Marilyn Minter, Joanne Leah, Siddhant Talwar and Betty Tompkins (via written statement).{{Cite web|url=http://www.artnews.com/2019/10/21/instagram-censorship-roundtable/|title=Instagram Holds Closed-Door Roundtable with Artists on Art and Nudity|last=Durón|first=Maximilíano|date=2019-10-21|website=ARTnews|language=en-US|access-date=2019-10-22}} After this meeting, Hebron's Instagram account was immediately shut down because she attempted to post a topless selfie from outside the meeting location.{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/22/arts/design/instagram-free-the-nipple.html|title=Will Instagram Ever 'Free the Nipple'?|date=2019-11-22|work=The New York Times|access-date=2019-11-26|language=en-US|issn=0362-4331}}
