The first system of ranks in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was standardized at the beginning of August 1992.Uredba sa zakonskom snagom o službi u Armiji Republike Bosne i Hercegovine, PR broj: 1260/92, 1. augusta 1992, u: Službeni list Armije Republike Bosne i Hercegovine, 2/92, 36-43. Appropriate insignia and duties for the ranks were also regulated, along with the appearance and stylisation which were based on the adopted state and army symbols and insignia.Pravilo o vojnim uniformama, zastavi, oznakama činova, rodova i dužnosti pripadnika Armije Republike Bosne i Hercegovine za vrijeme ratnog stanja, PR broj: 1263/92, 1. avgusta 1992, u: Službeni list Armije Republike Bosne i Hercegovine, 2/92, str. 54-57. Since the immediate implementation of officer training was delayed, this system of ranks remained unused.
However, in July 1993, a new military rank system was introduced, they were defined as “wartime ranks”, in which changes were made to the gradation of non-commissioned (Staff sergeant and Master sergeant) and commissioned officers (Senior lieutenant, Senior captain, Major and Brigadier).Uredba sa zakonskom snagom o izmjenama i dopunama Uredbe sa zakonskom snagom o službi u Armiji Republike Bosne i Hercegovine, PR broj: 1526/92, 18. juli 1993, u: Službeni list Armije Republike Bosne i Hercegovine, 3/93, 103-105. The appearance and stylisation remained similar to the previous system and were based on the army insignia, and the colors of the state symbols. By the end of 1993, this proces of officer gradation was implemented, 9.007 commissioned and 8.669 non-commissioned officers were appointed.{{cite book |last1=Delić |first1=Rasim |title=Armija Republike Bosne i Hercegovine: nastanak, razvoj i odbrana zemlje |date=2007 |publisher=Vijeće Kongresa bošnjačkih intelektualaca |location=Sarajevo |isbn=9789958471056 |page=51 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=stqaRQAACAAJ}}
