Taiwan's first justice ministry was created as part of the Government-General of Taiwan when Taiwan was under Japanese rule.{{cite web|last=Chen|first=Chih-hsiung|title=高野孟矩:司法獨立奮鬥史之第一人|url=https://www.academia.edu/31226656/%E9%AB%98%E9%87%8E%E5%AD%9F%E7%9F%A9_%E5%8F%B8%E6%B3%95%E7%8D%A8%E7%AB%8B%E5%A5%AE%E9%AC%A5%E5%8F%B2%E4%B9%8B%E7%AC%AC%E4%B8%80%E4%BA%BA|work=National Chiao Tung University|language=zh-tw}}
The Republic of China's Ministry of Justice was established in 1912 in mainland China. After several name changes, the Ministry of Judicial Administration began its administration in Taiwan in 1945, before the central government was shifted to Taipei in 1949 after the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan. On 1 July 1980, the ministry was renamed again to the Ministry of Justice.{{cite news |title=History (including voice) |url=https://www.moj.gov.tw/cp-1117-43105-f4d15-095.html |access-date=23 May 2020 |agency=Ministry of Justice |date=29 January 2007}}{{cite news |title=部史 |url=https://www.moj.gov.tw/cp-90-44573-24f5b-001.html |access-date=23 May 2020 |agency=Ministry of Justice |date=13 March 2017 |language=zh}}
