The Modified Toy Orchestra is an experimental music group from Birmingham, England. Brian Duffy, the main member and creator of the orchestra makes the group's instruments by circuit bending sound making devices, such as toy keyboards, and educational spelling toys.
History
The band was founded by Brian Duffy as a one-man project.{{Citation | title = Child's play for the Modified Toy Orchestra | newspaper = Birmingham Post | date = 5 September 2010 | url = http://www.birminghampost.co.uk/lifestyle/childs-play-modified-toy-orchestra-3927475 | accessdate = 29 April 2014}} He originally began by sampling sounds from toys to use in his electronic music, but after disassembling a Texas Instruments Speak & Spell he realised he could modify them to produce new sounds, turning the toys themselves into instruments.{{Citation | title = Play that funky Barbie Doll | newspaper = The Guardian | date = 8 March 2007 | url = https://www.theguardian.com/music/2007/mar/08/electronicmusic.pascalwyse | accessdate = 29 April 2014}} He began looking in car boot sales and skips for more electronic toys to modify and use in performances.{{Citation | title = Modified Toy Orchestra at Birmingham Town Hall | newspaper = Birmingham Mail | date = 3 September 2010 | url = http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/music/modified-toy-orchestra-at-birmingham-town-131234 | accessdate = 29 April 2014}}
Duffy describes the intent behind his music as "an interest in the surplus value and hidden potential of seemingly redundant technology."{{Citation | title = Modified Toy Orchestra | newspaper = Time Out Hong Kong | date = 3 March 2009 | url = http://www.timeout.com.hk/music/features/21166/modified-toy-orchestra.html | accessdate = 29 April 2014}}
