A mokorotlo is a type of straw hat widely used for traditional Sotho clothing, and is the national symbol of Lesotho and the national symbol of the Basotho and Lesotho peoples. An image of the Mokorotlo appears on the Lesotho flag, and on Lesotho vehicle licence plates. The design is believed to have been inspired by the conical mountain Mount Qiloane.{{cite web |url= http://mg.co.za/article/2015-09-04-thaba-bosiu-where-the-mountain-is-king |archivedate=1 October 2015 |last= Mzolo |first = Shoks|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151001131747/http://mg.co.za/article/2015-09-04-thaba-bosiu-where-the-mountain-is-king |title=Thaba Bosiu: Where the mountain is king |url-status=live |accessdate = 25 April 2016 |date = 4 September 2015|publisher=Mail & Guardian }}{{cite web |first = Daniela |publisher = Tagesspiegel |url=http://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/stadtleben/mit-hut-und-reisepass-botschaften-in-berlin-laden-buerger-ein/1549232.html |title=Botschaften in Berlin laden Bürger ein |trans-title= Embassies in German welcome visitors | language=DE |last=Martens |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130403115537/http://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/stadtleben/mit-hut-und-reisepass-botschaften-in-berlin-laden-buerger-ein/1549232.html |accessdate=25 April 2016 |url-status=live |date=3 September 2009 |archivedate=3 April 2013 }} It is known as “molianyeoe”, which means "he who executes judgement in court" in Sesotho.{{cite journal |title=The Cultural Meaning of Names among Basotho of Southern Africa: A Historical and Linguistic Analysis |first=Mthobeli |last=Guma |journal=Nordic Journal of African Studies |volume=10 |issue=3 |date=2001 |url=http://www.njas.helsinki.fi/pdf-files/vol10num3/guma.pdf}}

History
The origins of the mokorotlo are unclear. A similarly shaped hat, called a toedang,{{Cite web|title=The Cape Malay |work=South African History Online|url=https://www.sahistory.org.za/article/cape-malay|access-date=2020-07-07|date=19 February 2020}} was commonly worn by the Cape Malays, who are descendants of slaves from the East Indies. It is believed that the Sotho may have adopted the mokorotlo through exposure to these hats.{{Cite journal|doi = 10.17159/tvl.v.53i2.9|title = Insights into translation and the original text: Thomas Mofolo's Chaka|journal = Tydskrif vir Letterkunde|volume = 53|issue = 2|pages = 117–127|year = 2016|last1 = Nakin|first1 = Moroesi R|last2 = Kock|first2 = Inie J|doi-access = free}}{{Better source|date=July 2020}}
The mokorotlo was likely adopted in the early 20th century, when chiefs began to wear the hat and began singing a song also known as the ‘Mokorotlo’ to garner support at village “Pitso”, which is a gathering.{{cite journal |title=The Evolution of a Symbol: Mokorotlo and National Identity in Lesotho |first=Scott |last=Rosenberg |date=December 1999 |journal=Review of Southern African Studies |volume=3 |issue=2 |url=https://www.ajol.info/index.php/rosas/article/view/22996 |accessdate=20 August 2020 |doi=10.4314/rosas.v3i2.22996}} In its original form, it was exclusively worn by males to gatherings.
