The Movement of National Responsibility (Movimento di Responsabilità Nazionale, MRN) was a small centrist parliamentary political party in Italy led by Domenico Scilipoti.

Background

The party was founded on 9 December 2010 by three deputies coming from centre-left parties and headed to support the centre-right government led by Silvio Berlusconi: Massimo Calearo (ex-PD and ex-ApI), Bruno Cesario (ex-PD and ex-ApI) and Domenico Scilipoti (ex-IdV).{{Cite web|url=http://archiviostorico.corriere.it/2010/dicembre/10/Rissa_sui_transfughi_Razzi_lascia_co_9_101210033.shtml|title = Archivio Corriere della Sera}} On 14 December the three deputies voted in favour of Berlusconi in a close vote of confidence.{{Cite web|url=http://www.corriere.it/politica/speciali/2010/la-fiducia/notizie/14-12-votazione-camere_19cd2bb2-0757-11e0-a25e-00144f02aabc.shtml|title = Berlusconi vince per tre voti e va al Colle Poi da Vespa: "Con Fli trattative chiuse"}} In October 2011 the party had its first congress: Scilipoti was confirmed secretary and Cesario president.{{Cite web|url=http://archiviostorico.corriere.it/2011/ottobre/22/Patria_famiglia_agopuntura_Italia_Scilipoti_co_8_111022032.shtml|title = Archivio Corriere della Sera}}

On 20 January 2011 the MRN was a founding component of Responsible Initiative, a centre-right group in the Italian Chamber of Deputies.{{cite web |url=http://www.ilmessaggero.it/articolo.php?id=135365&sez=HOME_INITALIA |title=Nascono i Responsabili con 2 prestiti PDL ma governo non ha maggioranza assoluta - Il Messaggero |website=www.ilmessaggero.it |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110122064839/http://www.ilmessaggero.it/articolo.php?id=135365&sez=HOME_INITALIA |archive-date=2011-01-22}} {{Cite web|url=http://www.ilsole24ore.com/art/notizie/2011-01-20/ecco-responsabili-pronti-difendere-123748.shtml?uuid=AaHn4J1C|title=Ecco i 21 responsabili pronti a difendere Berlusconi. In October 2012, the balance of accounts of the People of Freedom showed that the Movement of National Responsibility had received €49,000 of financial support from PdL for posters advertising the MRN's founding congress.{{Citation |first=Annalisa |last=Cuzzocrea |title=Spuntano i fondi ai transfughi così il partito ha finanziato Scilipoti |newspaper=La Repubblica |date=31 October 2012}}

In 2013 the party joined Forza Italia.

Scilipotism

Scilipotism is a neologism that appeared in the spoken language in December 2010, after Domenico Scilipoti, elected in an opposition party (Italia dei Valori) left the party and started supporting the Berlusconi Government coalition.{{cite news|last=Emsden|first=Christopher|title=Italian Rebel MP Suggests Italy Not Liable For Its Public Debt|url=http://www.nasdaq.com/aspx/stock-market-news-story.aspx?storyid=201111210646dowjonesdjonline000155&title=italian-rebel-mp-suggests-italy-not-liable-for-its-public-debt|accessdate=15 December 2011|newspaper=NASDAQ|date=21 November 2011|agency=Dow Jones & Company}}

The neologism seems to describe such a sudden transformation of political ideas and, particularly, of Parliament position (in Italy known as il salto della quaglia – the jump of the quail) {{cite web|last=IL SUO NUOVO “MOVIMENTO” A BROLO (ME). A group of "scilipotists" made the Berlusconi Government surviving for about one more year.

As per the International Business Times, '"Everybody says that I am crazy, but I don't care. They said the same to Ezra Pound," said Scilipoti during the seminar. Pound was confined to a U.S. mental hospital after the war.' {{cite news|last=Mezzofiore|first=Gianluca|title=Berlusconi Allies Linked to Florence Killer Gianluca Casseri's Far-Right Group|url=http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/266838/20111214/berlusconi-link-far-right-florence-shooter-gianluca.htm|accessdate=15 December 2011|newspaper=International Business Times|date=14 December 2011}}
