Reception
John Dougan called the album "A superb collection."{{Cite web|last=Dougan|first=John|title=My First Bells: 1980-1983|url=https://www.allmusic.com/album/my-first-bells-1980-1983-mw0000845755|work=AllMusic|access-date=March 14, 2020}} Critic Ira Robbins called it "essential." Jon Pareles of The New York Times said "Minutemen crammed telegraphic lyrics and allusions to blues, rock, Captain Beefheart and jazz into songs that generally lasted less than two minutes each" while saying the songs have "bite" and "virtuosity."{{Cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/1985/10/25/arts/top-rockers-are-in-town-swinging-back-to-basics.html|title=Top Rockers Are in Town, Swinging Back to Basics|first=Jon|last=Pareles|date=October 25, 1985|work=The New York Times|access-date=March 14, 2020}}
