Neptune is an experimental / industrial noise rock band originally hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. Throughout its 30 year history, the band has largely operated as a collective, not only by employing a rotating membership, but also often collaborating with other musicians and artists both live and on record. They are noted for having built their custom-made instruments out of scrap steel and other found-object and recycled materials. The instruments themselves can be heavy and foreboding "self-made from antiquated machines and scrap metal, forged at extreme angles like props from a German expressionist film."{{cite web |last1=Crock |first1=Jason |title=Neptune - Gone Lake review |url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/11417-gong-lake/ |website=Pitchfork |publisher=Pitchfork Media |access-date=April 29, 2008 |ref=Neptune - Gone Lake review}} A reviewer once said of the band: "Neptune really do accurately approximate in their music the tragic and violent desolation of the auto graveyards from which they draw their raw materials."{{cite web |last1=Tangari |first1=Joe |title=Intimate Lightning Review |url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/5901-intimate-lightning/ |website=Pitchfork |publisher=Pitchfork Media |access-date=June 20, 2004 |ref=Intimate Lightning Review}} While another wrote: "Neptune’s closest comparison could only be themselves."{{cite web |last1=Stas |first1=Ben |title=Neptune Played The Midway - 6/24 |url=https://www.yardhawk.net/everybodytalking/archives/26100 |website=Noise Floor |date=7 July 2023 |publisher=Yardhawk |access-date=July 7, 2023 |ref=Neptune 2023 Tour}}

Over the years the instruments have evolved to incorporate oscillators and other electronic devices as band "have integrated some really smart looking industrial class synthesizer gear"{{cite web |last1=Torrone |first1=Phillip |title=Neptune – Scrap Metal Instruments |url=https://makezine.com/article/craft/music/neptune-scrap-metal-instr/ |website=Make |publisher=makezine.com |access-date=April 3, 2006 |ref=Neptune – Scrap Metal Instruments}} into their noise-making arsenal.
